Facebook Live has a Porn Problem

After the Mark Zuckerberg announcement of $3Bn for their initiative with his wife Priscilla to end disease on Facebook Live, I found myself on Facebook Live Maps to check out some of the things people are sharing.

And I realised there’s a problem with the having everyone able to see what people across the world are sharing using Facebook’s new feature.

About 5k people were watching this in 14 minutes. And it took about 15 minutes after reporting for this to disappear from the Map.

Facebook Live is not bad. It is fun to watch friends, media houses, celebrities, politicians etc, share their stuff in real time.

But there should be a way to control all that.

Facebook live is now available, if I’m not wrong to everyone. Meaning any account can go live and public. Meaning they can share anything they want to. Even mature content.

A couple of things I find ridiculous are:

  • No control on what goes live
  • Anyone can see whoever is live by accessing the Facebook Live Map
  • Report button is too damn hard to find
  • Even after reporting, the content continues for quite some while

Facebook should find a way to stop this. Many pages and personal accounts that go live can be accessible to people of different ages including 13 to 17 year olds.

I don’t know what can be done myself. But Facebook should find a way to protect minors from such content.
