Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 Unboxing and First Impressions

You will remember my thoughts on last year’s Huawei Y7 Prime where I said I would be more comfortable with the device if it retailed between Ksh. 17000 and Ksh. 19000. Well, the new 2018 version of the Y7 Prime is out, and it costs Ksh. 16999.

The Huawei Y7 Prime has officially launched in Kenya and has been available for purchase since the pre-order period on Kilimall.

Huawei has partnered with Kilimall to sell the Y7 Prime as the authorised online store. This is ahead of Kilimall Mobile Week which is scheduled to start on April 26th.

I’ve had the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 for a couple of hours and this article contains my very initial thoughts after unboxing it. My full review, and other related posts will be up on the site in the coming days.

Here’s my unboxing video:

In the box:

Inside you will find:

  • Huawei Y7 Prime device
  • Charger
  • Micro-USB Cable
  • SIM Remover

There are no earphones included unfortunately. But the good thing is the phone has the headphone jack correctly placed at the bottom of the phone. I love it when companies put everything down below.

While unboxing the device, I didn’t know the specifications. What amazes me is the fact that for the price you get the new version of Android, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, and full display 5.99 screen with the 18:9 aspect ratio we all love. However, the screen resolution isn’t FULL HD. It is a 720p display and that’s a bummer.

Volume and Power

What I like after a few hours:

  • Display: It is not full HD, but it is good enough. Plus the reduced bezels make it even more good looking especially as compared to last year’s phone.
  • Design: This goes without say, the back is perfectly clean, the camera setup looks amazing. It is a phone you will carry comfortably, not just because it light, but because it also looks premium. The finish is superb. Everything is really clean.
  • Performance: The Snapdragon 430 is smooth enough for everything I have tried in the past few hours. Which is good news for people who don’t want Mediatek devices.

What I am yet to test:

Since I got the device yesterday evening, I am yet to have conclusive thoughts on the following:

  • Dual Cameras: I’ve seen there’s a wide aperture mode on the camera which I think is the mode where both cameras are put to use. I will share the different images in a post soon.
  • Face Unlock: The phone has this feature. There’s a learning curve going to EMUI and I need to learn to find things as the UI is heavy.
  • Huawei Clone: A feature that allows you to copy all data from one phone to your new Huawei device.
  • AR Lens Mode: That apparently augments reality when using the selfie camera.

I am excited about all these features above, and would love to share with you my thoughts, so expect a couple of more posts talking about this phone. Also, share your thoughts and questions with me about this phone. And I will make sure to answer them in the coming posts.

  1. Actually it’s a good phone. I bought it and regarding to the number of apps that it holds the performance works so well. No lags or whatsoever. It’s a perfect mid-range phone.

  2. Quite something, right. I think the pricing point is good for a 3GB Ram, and 32GB Rom device. This makes it easily available and affordable for almost everyone who’s shopping for a new phone. Waiting for the Full Review.
