Nokia’s new C1 Plus costs KES. 9,000 for 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, 2500mAh battery

The Nokia C1 Plus is a very minor upgrade to the Nokia C1 from 2019. The upgrade here being the fact that the processor is a little different, there’s support for 4G networks, and the OS Version in now Android 10. That’s all. And while the original Nokia C1 started at KES. 6,000, this new model has a recommended retail price of KES. 8,999.

At that price you’re getting 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, a 2500mAh battery, a single 5MP rear camera, and single 5MP front camera. This is definitely the worst pricing decision considering that Nokia’s own original C1 was way cheaper despite sharing similar specs. And so is the Nokia C2 which is also cheaper despite featuring a bigger, better display and more battery. (Note: The higher pricing could be as a result of the weakened Kenya Shilling against the dollar, $84 is the RRP in certain markets)

At the KES. 9,000, the Nokia C1 Plus faces tough competition from Infinix and Xiaomi who have devices with more RAM, better camera setups, fingerprint scanners and even more storage.

On HMD’s official release, there’s no mention of software updates for this phone. Given it is an Android GO device, we may not see it receiving the usual promised 2-years system updates, perhaps only the security updates. HMD should clarify on this.

Of their new device, Senior Business Manager at HMD Global said “The Nokia C1 was extremely successful in its mission to bring a great smartphone experience and make that first step to a smartphone truly accessible to all. With the next generation connectivity already out there, operators across the world are optimising and 4G is being adapted as the new base line, leaving many 2G and 3G markets vulnerable to uncertainty. With the new Nokia C1 Plus, we offer reassurance that your new smartphone will go the distance and the certainty that you can trust it to connect anywhere.”

It seems like 4G is Nokia’s selling point with this device. However, if all you want is 4G support, remember there are now many cheaper devices than the Nokia C1 Plus with 4G support. That includes the Neon Series from Safaricom, or the Neon Ray Pro that you can get for KES. 20 a day.

What are your thoughts on the new Nokia C1 Plus?
