If you’re in the market for a new device, here’s a device you’ll want to pick up not just because of its price, but because of the specs you’re getting for less than 20k. In Kenya, the price range of between KES. 10,000 and KES. 25,000 is really competitive. There are very many new devices launched every quarter within this range. So, the only way to have your device stand out is to ensure you win the spec war.
Xiaomi has for a long while now constantly come out on top of the spec-competition within all price ranges. Sometimes one even wonders how they manage to ship certain devices at very low price points. The new Redmi 9T is no different. Now available countrywide, according to Xiaomi Kenya, you will be able to choose between two storage variants:
- 4GB RAM and 128GB Storage for KES. 18,599
- 4GB RAM and 64GB Storage for KES. 17,399
Of course, I’ll advice you to top up and pick the 128GB version. More storage is always better. And remember, the 128GB version uses UFS 2.2 which is way faster than the UFS 2.1 storage with the 64GB model.
I constantly say Xiaomi wins the spec game, but isn’t just because of big numbers. It is also because of the quality of what’s used. As I’ve stated above, you can see the company is using UFS storage. Most companies selling devices at this price point use eMMC storage. The UFS standard is more advanced and way faster than eMMC.
Also, instead of the common Mediatek processors you’d expect at this price point, Xiaomi is using a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. But unlike the low end Snapdragon 400-series we see Nokia use at such price points, Xiaomi is using a more powerful Snapdragon 662 chip.
With this phone, I expect a fast experience thanks to the UFS storage, and the Snapdragon 662.
I also expect really good battery life thanks to the really big 6000mAh battery. Xiaomi is including a fast 18W charger in the box which is sweet, and should help reduce the charge times for such a big battery. I am glad this is over USB Type-C, something companies like Transsion are yet to embrace for their low end phones.
With the phone’s large battery, you’ll be able to reverse charge other devices especially things like wireless earbuds at a 2.5W rate using the USB type-C port.
