Nokia has been pretty serious with their promise to send out Android Upgrades for two years. All their first gen Nokia phones launched in 2017 (except for Nokia 2) currently run Android 9 Pie. Recently, HMD Global announced they will add an extra year of security updates to these first gen devices.
After Google’s announcement of Android 10 following the dropping off of the dessert naming structure, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer took to Twitter to outline the roadmap for when Nokia devices will be receiving Android 10.
Here’s the full roadmap:
As you can see, the first Nokia phones to receive Android 10 will be dong so in the next coming months. These will be the Nokia 7.1, Nokia 8.1 and Nokia 9 Pureview. We can expect these three phones to be among, if not the very first phones in the world to receive official Android 10 when that rolls out. Remember, anyone with the Nokia 8.1 is currently receiving Android 10 Latest Preview as an OTA update.
Anyway, let’s breakdown that table into a chart. Will try and update the dates or months if and when that becomes available.
Here’s when your HMD Global Nokia Phone will receive Android 10:
Timeframe | Device |
Quarter 4 2020 | Nokia 7.1 Nokia 8.1 Nokia 9 Pureview |
Early Quarter 1 2020 | Nokia 6.1 Nokia 6.1 Plus Nokia 7 Plus |
Mid Quarter 1 2020 | Nokia 2.2 Nokia 3.1 Plus Nokia 3.2 Nokia 4.2 |
Late Quarter 1 2020 | Nokia 1 Plus Nokia 5.1 Plus Nokia 8 Sirocco |
Quarter 2 2020 | Nokia 2.1 Nokia 5.1 Nokia 3.1 Nokia 1 |
What HMD Global is assuring all Nokia phone users is that by the end of June 2020, all these phones should be running Android 10 if everything goes okay. Not many companies can boast of such dedication to Android Updates. By the time HMD updates all these devices, many flagship devices from both Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi etc. will not have received any serious timelines on the same. Which is a shame when you think of the prices of Nokia devices versus these flagships.
