OPPO A9 (2020) Official – to be available in the Kenyan Market

OPPO has announced an updated A9 for 2020. The new phone joins the company’s growing list of mid-range phones, and replaces the original OPPO A9 that was announced back in April this year. OPPO Kenya has confirmed the new phone will be available in the market though they haven’t given any specific dates.

There’s now a Quad Camera setup at the back including a 48MP main lens, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 2MP depth sensor, and an extra 2MP sensor probably for macro-shots. The main 48MP has an aperture of f/1.8, and can shoot 4K videos at 30fps. The front camera is a 16MP shooter and shoots 1080p videos at 30fps.

The new quad camera setup is a huge upgrade to this year’s A9 which featured a dual 16MP + 2MP setup.

Talking of upgrades, the new phone comes with a 5000mAh battery which is way better than the 4020mAh that came with the A9 2019. There’s now a Snapdragon 665 processor instead of the Helio P70, and there’s now Bluetooth 5.0. The phone comes running Android 9 Pie with OPPO’s custom ColorOS 6.1.

The display on the newer phone is what could be the major turn-off for many people. Instead of a 1080p panel like on the original phone, OPPO has opted for a 720p panel on this one.

I am still shocked OPPO is going with a Micro-USB port for a 2020 Phone. It is a crazy decision when a company like Xiaomi is shipping the Redmi 8A, a sub $100 phone, with a type-C port.

We still don’t know the price of the new A9 (2020), but given the 2019 version launched at KES. 27,000, we should expect it to cost about the same. When OPPO Kenya shares more details on when the phone will be available locally, we’ll share an update.
