OnePlus 7T Series: A confusing lineup for the same specs?

Last year, on October 29th, OnePlus announced the OnePlus 6T. Then this year in May, came the OnePlus 7. It hasn’t been 6 months yet, but the OnePlus 7T series is here. But we’re now used to the company’s refresh cycles. I think it works for them. Otherwise why continue with the trend?

The OnePlus 7T Series is made up of three devices:

  • OnePlus 7T
  • OnePlus 7T PRO
  • OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition

Essentially, one year later since the 6T, OnePlus is selling about 8 Phones in total:

  • OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 6T McLaren
  • OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7 Pro McLaren
  • OnePlus 7T, OnePlus 7T Pro, OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren

It is crazy in very many aspects. All of them are powerful devices. All of them will keep receiving updates for a while. And funny enough, most of them have the same specs – just slightly different designs, with different price tags.

Here’s why the 7T Series is a confusing line-up:

The 7T is like the 7 Pro launched in May in terms of cameras. But it is seen as an upgrade to the normal 7 also launched in May. It adds a new 90Hz Display that came with the 7 Pro, but maintains the resolution of the 7.

The 7T Pro is like the 7T in terms of specs packing 8GB RAM, a Snapdragon 855+, and a 90Hz Display. But it is an upgrade to the 7 PRO from May with higher resolution, and no notch, instead it has a pop-up camera.

I don’t know if someone who bought a OnePlus 7 Pro in May is very happy of their device now that the OnePlus 7T PRO is out. I mean, it has been only 5 months. These confusing upgrades seem to me like a company that’s trying to sell the same device in as many variants as possible. How long they can sustain this business model – which I hope makes profits – is what I am waiting to see.
