Russian brand BQ has launched a phone called the Aurora SE for their market. The funny thing is the device looks eerily similar to the Nokia 5.1 Plus, also known as the Nokia X5.
Saying it is similar is wrong actually. It is the exact phone just re-branded. Same body size, same look notch, same materials, same screen size, same processor, same RAM, and storage option. It also comes running Android 9.0 Pie.
It isn’t clear how the Russian company picked up the Nokia 5.1 Plus for this rebranding. It could be they rented the design, or it could be HMD is reselling their devices to other brands.
A NokiaMob writer claims HMD Global is short of money. Which doesn’t make sense given this QZ article from over a year ago.
I used the 5.1 Plus and really loved it. The body, the finish, that it was an Android ONE device, and above all the cameras, and USB type-C port. Though I never got to write a full review, it was a phone I constantly recommended through the year.
In Kenya it cost between KES. 18,500 and KES. 20,000, that’s $185 to $200. In Russia, the BQ Aurora SE is launching at around just $116.
