We had already established that Samsung had a great year in Africa in 2019 thanks to the Galaxy A-series. Well, new data from research firm Omdia shows the company also enjoyed tremendous sales across the world.
These were the top 10 most popular phones of 2019 by the number of sales:
- iPhone XR
- iPhone 11
- Samsung Galaxy A10
- Samsung Galaxy A50
- Samsung Galaxy A20
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 8
- Xiaomi Redmi NOTE 7
- iPhone 11 Pro
- Samsung Galaxy J2 Core
Of the top ten, Samsung boasts of having 4 devices. And that’s not the incredible bit. The best part is that these are all budget devices. These aren’t their flagship S or NOTE line of phones. These are the other small devices that can easily be forgotten. It is also funny that the Galaxy J2 Core somehow was still a phone millions of people bought last year.
Of course Apple continues to dominate sales of phones worldwide. The iPhone XR which is now a generation old was the most sold phone, followed by its replacement the iPhone 11. The iPhone 8 dropped from being the most sold phone of 2018 to being the 7th most sold phone last year.
I am happy that Xiaomi’s Redmi NOTE 7 – which I really loved and very much recommended to very many people – managed to be the 8th most popular phone of 2019. I hope its replacement, the NOTE 8, will do just as well.
Huawei sadly didn’t make it to the top 10 list last year. Maybe the ban affected sales, or maybe Samsung’s revamped A-series line-up altered the balance of things.
In 2020, the Galaxy A51 will definitely be among the top 10 most sold devices. The demand in Kenya is extremely high.
Which device did you think you’d see on the list and are shocked isn’t? Which devices do you expect to see next year?
