At the GSMA hosted 5G-A Industry Roundtable during MWC Shanghai 2024, Huawei Technologies unveiled its ambitious plans for the next generation of mobile technology, 5G-Advanced (5G-A). This announcement comes at a pivotal moment for the tech industry, which is currently experiencing a significant boom in artificial intelligence (AI).
Differentiated User Experience with 5G-A
Huawei has emphasized the transformative potential of advanced network capabilities to bring about diverse mobile applications, fundamentally changing the user experience. David Li, President of Huawei’s 5G<E TDD Domain, highlighted that the commercial launch of 5G-A in 2024, amidst the rise of AI, presents a fresh opportunity for the mobile sector. He stated, “Huawei has consistently innovated in four core technologies to build green, seamless 5G-A connections that provide always-on services. Looking forward, we will continue to work closely with global partners to leverage the deterministic network capabilities to embrace infinite possibilities brought by the flourishing applications in the AI era.”
The roundtable brought together an impressive array of global regulators, operators, equipment vendors, research institutes, and vertical industry leaders. This assembly offered a platform for participants to share their achievements in network construction and application during the evolution from 5G to 5G-A. Discussions delved into the intricacies of 5G-A business monetization and strategic development, underscoring the critical role of collaboration in driving the technology forward.
High-Quality 5G Networks as a Cornerstone
David Li further noted that high-quality 5G networks are the foundation upon which 5G-A deployment will be built. Enhancing 5G capabilities in residential areas, high-speed railways, and both urban and rural locales is essential for establishing a multi-functional 5G-A network. End-to-end smart operations empower operators with comprehensive insights into network issues, enabling self-healing and optimization. This maximises network efficiency and significantly improves user experience.
The industry consensus at the roundtable was clear: the time is ripe for 5G-A deployment. The large-scale deployment of 3CC technology, which helps achieve 5 Gbps network speeds, is particularly noteworthy. Such speeds are perfect for immersive experiences in gaming, sports events, and audio-visual entertainment. Moreover, the 5G-A industry chain has reached maturity, with U6G, mmWave, and other new spectrum resources being distributed to some operators for verification. With more than 30 types of terminals globally supporting 5G-A and over 60 operators having commercially released 5G-A, the entire industry chain is poised to work together to build more efficient, intelligent, and reliable networks and applications.
Evolution of 5G to 5G-A
During the roundtable, Huawei officially announced the technological evolution direction from 5G to 5G-A. This evolution involves moving towards greener mobile networks that feature more connections and provide a more deterministic experience. Key innovations include the long-term development of the 3D extremely large antenna array (ELAA) technology, differentiated user experiences, full-time all-scenario green solutions, and AI-empowered networks.
AI’s rapid integration into PCs, mobile phones, wearables, and vehicle-mounted systems is bringing about massive connected objects, rich content, and varied user traffic models. This expansion places higher demands on network capabilities while simultaneously creating opportunities for new services, superior network quality, and enhanced operations and maintenance (O&M). Huawei called for industry-wide collaboration to promote shared success in the 5G-A industry. “AI is rapidly reaching PCs, mobile phones, wearables, and vehicle-mounted systems, bringing about massive, connected objects, rich content, and varied user traffic models. This poses higher requirements on network capabilities while creating opportunities for new services, superior network quality, and enhanced O&M. To embrace new opportunities in the era, Huawei calls for industry-wide collaboration to promote shared success in the 5G-A industry,” Huawei stated.
The Future with 5.5G and F5.5G
Looking ahead, 2024 is set to witness the commercial launch of 5.5G. Meanwhile, F5.5G, characterized by gigabit optical networks, is already underway. These advancements signify a new era of connectivity and technological innovation, driven by Huawei’s commitment to creating more efficient, intelligent, and sustainable network solutions.
In conclusion, Huawei’s announcement of 5G-A marks a significant milestone in the evolution of mobile technology. As the tech industry continues to ride the wave of the AI boom, the development and deployment of 5G-A promise to unlock new possibilities and drive forward the next generation of digital innovation.
