Spotify Introduces Offline Backup to Keep Music Playing Without Internet

Spotify has long lagged behind in areas like sound quality and other features, but they have announced a new feature, Offline Backup, that will keep your music playing even if you go offline unexpectedly. Spotify automatically generates the Offline Backup Playlist, filled with recently queued and streamed songs that have been downloaded and cached in your phone’s memory. Spotify also mentioned that this offline playlist will evolve frequently and customize itself, heavily depending on your listening habits.

This feature is quite important, even though you can already download songs manually from your playlists to play offline. It provides extra peace of mind, ensuring you’ll have songs to listen to while traveling on a plane, on a road trip, or during power outages when both Wi-Fi and mobile data are unavailable.

Why do I say that Spotify is late to the party, though the move is welcome? I’ve been using YouTube Music Premium, and in the background, at least 100 songs are automatically downloaded into an offline folder called Offline Mixtape, a feature that’s been available for nearly a year now. YouTube selects songs you’ve liked, streamed repeatedly, queued, or received as suggestions to create the Mixtape, using the same method that Spotify is now adopting. Other platforms, like Netflix, also offer similar features, with automatic downloads of movies and TV shows.

Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, teased this feature last year, referring to it as “Your Offline Mix,” but it has finally been released. However, this feature is only available to premium users. The question now is: Does this addition justify the recent price increase?
