Dr. James Mwangi, the Group Managing Director and CEO of Equity Group Holdings, has been appointed to the World Bank Group’s High-Level Advisory Council on Jobs. The council aims to tackle global employment challenges, focusing on youth and female job creation in emerging and developing economies.
The advisory council was established during the 2024 World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Co-chaired by Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of Singapore, and Michelle Bachelet, Former President of Chile, it comprises 14 global leaders from diverse fields, including policy-making, academia, and business.
The council’s mission is to address the pressing need for employment as over 1.2 billion individuals in the Global South will reach working age in the next decade, with only 420 million jobs projected to be available. The council will meet bi-monthly over two years to develop scalable, actionable solutions for job creation.
Dr. Mwangi expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the importance of leveraging Africa’s demographic shifts to drive growth and poverty reduction. He aims to integrate the council’s learnings into Equity Group’s Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan, which targets the creation of 50 million jobs by 2030.
The appointment underscores Dr. Mwangi’s long-standing contributions to inclusive finance and socioeconomic transformation. Equity Group, under his leadership, has evolved into a global financial leader recognized for innovation and resilience, with accolades such as being named the strongest financial brand in Africa.
