Dr. James Mwangi Joins the Council on Foreign Relations Global Board of Advisors

Dr. James Mwangi, Managing Director and CEO of Equity Group, has been appointed to the Global Board of Advisors (GBA) of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). Founded in 1921, CFR is an independent organization focused on U.S. foreign policy and international relations.

About the Global Board of Advisors

The Global Board of Advisors consists of 33 members from 25 countries, including policymakers, academics, and business leaders. The board provides regional insights to CFR and facilitates dialogue between U.S. leaders and their counterparts worldwide.

Members of the board include:

  • David M. Rubenstein – Co-founder and Co-Chairman of The Carlyle Group.
  • Aliko Dangote – CEO of Dangote Group (Nigeria).
  • Julie Bishop – Chancellor of Australian National University (Australia).
  • Mo Ibrahim – Founder of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation (Sudan).
  • Sunil Bharti Mittal – Chairman of Bharti Enterprises (India).

Dr. Mwangi is among those who contribute to discussions on international relations and U.S. foreign policy.

Dr. Mwangi highlighted the importance of including African perspectives in global discussions, noting the opportunity to contribute to understanding Africa’s role in international affairs.

The Council on Foreign Relations, headquartered in New York and Washington, D.C., provides analysis and research on foreign policy and international relations. Its membership includes politicians, corporate leaders, academics, and media figures.

CFR also publishes Foreign Affairs, a bi-monthly journal, and organizes meetings to address global issues.

Focus on Africa

CFR’s Africa Program examines political, economic, and security developments across the continent. Key initiatives include:

  • Africa in Transition Blog – Covers political and security issues.
  • Roundtable Series – Topics include “Africa Strategic Opportunities” and “U.S. Strategic African Partners.”

The program produces research, hosts discussions, and engages with various stakeholders to deepen understanding of Africa’s role in global affairs.

Dr. Mwangi’s appointment to the Global Board of Advisors places him among individuals contributing to discussions on global policies and regional perspectives.
