
Equity Group Foundation has announced the selection of 750 top-performing students to join its Equity Leaders Program (ELP). These scholars, who excelled in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, will take part in a six-month pre-university paid internship at Equity Bank branches across the country as they prepare for university later this year.
Composition of the 2025 ELP Cohort:
- 350 Wings to Fly and Elimu Scholars who scored KCSE Grade A or A-.
- 167 top-performing students from each sub-county who scored Grade A (Plain).
- 233 top national scholars who achieved a minimum of Grade A with 84 points in their KCSE exams.
A Transformational Leadership Experience
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Equity Group Foundation Executive Chairman, Dr. James Mwangi, praised the scholars for their academic excellence and resilience:

The commissioning followed a two-week intensive induction program, where scholars engaged with leaders from various industries, including Equity Group’s top executives. These sessions focused on leadership, personal growth, and community development to prepare them for both academic and professional success.
Work Experience and Financial Support
During their six-month internship, the scholars will receive a monthly stipend, with part of it saved and released when they join university to instill a culture of financial responsibility. They will also benefit from mentorship by accomplished professionals, guiding them in career selection and personal development.
Equity Bank Kenya Managing Director, Moses Nyabanda, encouraged the scholars to uphold values such as trust, honesty, and integrity:

Scholars Share Their Journeys
Several scholars shared their inspiring stories:
- Dieume Baraka (Starehe Boys Centre, Grade A) – A refugee overcoming hardship, he sees education as a tool for peace and hopes to study a course that enables him to contribute to conflict resolution and community healing.
- Salmo Abdullahi Hassan (Parklands Arya Girls, Grade A-) – Grateful for the mentorship received, she looks forward to gaining hands-on experience during the internship and expanding her worldview before joining university.
- Elema Badaqe Duba (Makueni Boys, Grade A-) – Overcoming extreme challenges in Marsabit, he is determined to uplift his family from poverty and use the leadership training to create positive community impact.
Equity Leadership Program: A Legacy of Impact
Since its inception, the Equity Leaders Program has supported 29,515 scholars, with 9,700 students benefiting from the pre-university internship. The program has also facilitated:
- 970 students securing fully funded scholarships at top global universities, including 204 in Ivy League institutions.
- 132 Equity Afya medical centers established across Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The Equity Leadership Program continues to break geographical barriers, giving African scholars access to world-class education and leadership training. Through mentorship, international exposure, and skills development, the program is shaping future leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers committed to driving Africa’s progress.
