SKY Girls Kenya, the country’s leading teen empowerment initiative, is set to host SKY Fest 2025, its largest annual gathering of teenage girls. This year’s event, themed “True to Me,” will take place on March 1st in Nairobi and, for the first time, in Kisumu on April 12th, welcoming over 9,000 attendees across both cities.
A Movement That Empowers Through Action
Since its inception in 2020, SKY Girls Kenya has dedicated itself to empowering teenage girls to make informed choices about their health, education, and personal growth. Unlike traditional mentorship programs, SKY Girls engages young women through peer-driven discussions, relatable content, and immersive experiences.
This innovative approach has led to tangible results:
- 67% of SKY Girls are now better at resisting peer pressure.
- A 54% decrease in cigarette usage among participants since the program’s launch.
- 19% more SKY Girls have correct knowledge about HIV and AIDS.
- An 18% increase in girls believing they have the right to say ‘no’ to sexual pressure.
"We’ve already impacted nearly a million lives, but our journey continues," says Svetlana Polikarpova, Director of SKY Girls Kenya. "We believe in the power of sisterhood, connecting girls across Kenya so they can support, learn, and grow together. Their potential is limitless, and we’re here to help them unlock it."
From Entertainment to Empowerment: SKY Girls’ PAA – Born to Fly
Beyond live events, SKY Girls has successfully leveraged storytelling as a tool for empowerment. In 2022, they launched the acclaimed PAA – Born to Fly, a teen drama series tackling real-life issues like peer pressure, sexual harassment, and self-identity crises.

Following its Kalasha Film & TV Award 2022 nomination, PAA returned for a second season in 2023, expanding its themes to address HIV awareness and healthy decision-making.
"The heart of the initiative remains: Stay True to You, no matter how hard that can sometimes be," said Davina Leonard, the show’s scriptwriter.
Tackling Health, Peer Pressure & Self-Esteem
1. HPV Vaccine & Cancer Prevention
SKY Girls has taken a proactive role in cancer prevention by supporting the HPV vaccine drive, in collaboration with UNICEF, the Africa Cancer Foundation, and First Lady Dorothy Nyong’o.
2. Mentorship & Mental Well-being
Adolescence is a critical phase where self-esteem and mental health play a vital role in a girl’s future. Eric Gitau, a family planning expert, emphasizes the importance of guidance:
"During adolescence, girls face unique challenges, including navigating self-esteem, peer pressure, and societal expectations. Programs like SKY Girls connect them with positive role models, helping them make informed decisions about their health, education, and future."
3. Resisting Tobacco & Vaping Culture
Since 2020, SKY Girls has focused on reducing smoking and vaping among teens, achieving a 54% drop in cigarette use among its audience. The program’s efforts continue through education campaigns and interactive activities.
