Xiaomi Kenya has officially launched the Redmi A5, a new budget-friendly smartphone aimed at redefining the entry-level experience with a large 6.88-inch display, long battery life, and AI-powered cameras – all starting at KES 9,499.
Entry-Level Gets an Upgrade with the Redmi A5
Available from today April 22, 2025, the Redmi A5 enters the Kenyan market with a promise to elevate what users can expect from a sub-KES 10,000 phone. It blends essential features with modern enhancements, including a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, TÜV-certified eye comfort tech, and an immersive screen size uncommon in this price segment.
Immersive Viewing on a Large 6.88-inch Display
At the center of the device is a 6.88-inch display with a resolution of 1640×720 pixels (260 ppi). Xiaomi says the panel covers 70% of the NTSC color gamut and supports an 8-bit color depth, delivering richer visuals for media consumption and general use.
It supports up to 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, adjusting dynamically for smoother animations and scrolling in supported apps. With a 1500:1 contrast ratio and 450 nits of typical brightness, the screen is usable even in brighter environments.
The display is certified for eye comfort, with DC dimming and three TÜV Rheinland certifications – Low Blue Light (Software), Flicker Free, and Circadian Friendly.
All-Day Battery Life with 5200mAh Capacity
A key highlight of the Redmi A5 is its large 5200mAh battery. Xiaomi says this allows users to browse, stream, and communicate through the day without anxiety. When it comes to recharging, the device supports 15W fast charging through a USB Type-C port – although the charging adapter may be sold separately in some regions.
32MP AI Dual Rear Camera and 8MP Selfie Camera
Photography isn’t left behind. The Redmi A5 features a 32MP primary rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture and 4P lens setup, paired with a secondary sensor. Xiaomi includes modes like HDR, Night Mode, Ultra HD, and a filmCamera mode to cater to different creative needs.
Video recording maxes out at 1080p at 30fps.
On the front, there’s an 8MP selfie camera that supports fill-light portrait, HDR, and time-lapse. It also supports 1080p video recording, providing decent quality for video calls and social media.
Performance, Storage, and Software
The device is powered by the UNISOC T7250 processor, built on a 12nm process with an octa-core CPU reaching speeds up to 1.8GHz. It’s not aimed at gaming or high-performance tasks but promises stability for daily use like messaging, browsing, and media playback.
It ships with Android 15 (Go Edition), ensuring lightweight performance and regular security updates.
Two configurations are available:
- 3GB RAM + 64GB storage
- 4GB RAM + 128GB storage
Xiaomi supports virtual RAM expansion from ROM, allowing users to get a slight performance boost for multitasking.
Security and Connectivity
Security options include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and AI-powered face unlock.
Connectivity is solid for an entry-level phone, with Dual SIM 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2, FM radio support, and accurate location services via GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo.
Design and Build
Weighing 193g and measuring 8.26mm thick, the Redmi A5 has a sleek design available in Ocean Blue, Lake Green, Sandy Gold, and Midnight Black.

As part of the launch promotion, Xiaomi is bundling free Type-C earphones worth KES 899 and offering a 24+1 months warranty on the device, but only for a limited time.
