SEACOM East Africa Expands Investment in Practical ICT Education for Kenyan Students

SEACOM East Africa is intensifying its focus on bridging the gap between university education and the professional ICT world through its growing Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme. The initiative aims to equip Kenyan students with the technical and life skills necessary to transition successfully from academic institutions into the workforce.

At the core of SEACOM’s CSI efforts are targeted partnerships with universities across Kenya. Although current collaborations have largely been short-term, the company is actively working to formalise long-term relationships with higher learning institutions to ensure greater consistency, impact, and mutual value.

Academic Tours to Undersea Cable Facilities

One of the programme’s flagship components is the Academic Tours for engineering students. These visits are designed to provide hands-on exposure to SEACOM’s undersea cable infrastructure, helping students understand its critical role in global internet connectivity. The tours give students a rare look at the real-world applications of telecommunications engineering and international data transport systems.

Mentorship Beyond the Classroom

SEACOM staff are also leading a structured mentorship programme, going beyond academics to offer students practical insights into both engineering topics and essential soft skills. Sessions cover a range of topics, from applying theoretical principles in a workplace setting to career planning, communication, time management, and professionalism.

This dual approach — technical depth paired with life-readiness — is central to SEACOM’s strategy of shaping holistic professionals ready for dynamic roles in the ICT industry.

Paid Internships and Industrial Attachments

In addition to tours and mentorship, SEACOM is providing paid industrial attachments and internships to select students. Interns are offered three-month contracts, including a monthly stipend, assigned supervisors, and project-specific work aligned with their academic discipline. Tasks vary across departments, ensuring that each intern gets relevant and practical training.

To further acknowledge students’ efforts and boost employability, SEACOM has introduced Certificates of Participationand is looking into additional training offerings in the near future.

A Long-Term Vision for Regional Tech Empowerment

SEACOM’s commitment to youth empowerment is embedded in its long-term vision for East Africa’s digital ecosystem. By focusing on mentorship, real-world exposure, and skill development, the CSI programme is contributing to the creation of a highly skilled workforce prepared to lead innovation across the region.

The company maintains that the development of local talent is essential for sustained growth in the ICT sector — not just in Kenya, but across East Africa. SEACOM’s investment reflects a belief in preparing future engineers, developers, and technology leaders who will shape tomorrow’s infrastructure and digital solutions.
