It’s here. Apple’s biggest iPhone software update in years — iOS 26 — officially lands today, bringing a sleek new Liquid Glass design, smarter Apple Intelligence features, and more. But not every iPhone is invited to the party.
Apple confirmed iOS 26 during its September 2025 event, and the rollout begins globally on September 15. The update introduces a fresh look and AI-powered tools, but compatibility depends on your device — and some older models are getting cut off.
What’s Changing with iOS 26
iOS 26 is being billed as the most significant redesign in years, headlined by:

- Liquid Glass UI – A modern, translucent look for menus and notifications.
- Apple Intelligence upgrades – Smarter search, call screening, and Visual Intelligence.
- Everyday tools – Subtle tweaks to Messages, Photos, and app performance.
Which iPhones are Compatible
If your iPhone is from the last five to six years, you’re probably safe. Here’s the confirmed list:
Supported models include: iPhone 11 and newer, iPhone SE (2020 and 2022), plus all iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 models.
Dropped this year: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. These devices will remain on iOS 18 with security updates but won’t see iOS 26 features.
Apple Intelligence: Not for Everyone
While most iPhones can install iOS 26, the full Apple Intelligence suite needs more powerful hardware. Features like Genmoji, Image Playground, and advanced Visual Intelligence search will only work on:
- iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max
- All iPhone 16 models
- The upcoming iPhone 17 series
When iOS 26 Lands Around the World
Apple usually flips the switch at 10am PT. That translates to:
- UK: 6pm BST
- Kenya / East Africa: 8pm EAT
- India: 10:30pm IST
- Australia East: 3am AEST (Sept 16)
If you don’t see the update immediately, don’t panic. With millions downloading at once, Apple’s servers can lag.
How to Check for the Update
If you own a supported iPhone, you’ll soon get a notification to update. Just head to Settings > General > Software Update — and make sure you’re on Wi-Fi, charging, and backed up before you start.
Going Forward
Whether you upgrade immediately or wait a day or two for smoother downloads, iOS 26 is a big step forward for Apple’s mobile ecosystem. And if your iPhone didn’t make the cut, it might just be the nudge you need to start eyeing the iPhone 17 when it lands later this year.
