Microsoft Paint, like Photoshop, gets project files, Notepad and Snipping Tool updated too

Microsoft is rolling out significant updates to its core Windows 11 apps — Paint, Snipping Tool, and Notepad — with new features now being tested by Windows Insiders in the Dev and Canary Channels. The upgrades aim to make the tools more powerful while keeping them user-friendly for both casual and professional use.

Paint updates

Paint, one of Microsoft’s oldest applications, is receiving Photoshop-like capabilities for the first time. Users will soon be able to save their work as editable project files with a new .paint extension. These files will preserve layers, allowing creators to close a project and return later to do further editing right where they left off. Dave Grochocki, principal product manager lead for Microsoft’s Windows inbox apps, said the feature makes it easy to “seamlessly pick up where you left off.” This update brings Paint closer to professional design software, bridging the gap between casual art creation and advanced editing.

Another notable addition to Paint is the introduction of opacity sliders for pencil and brush tools. Users can now adjust transparency levels directly from the left side of the canvas, enabling finer control over shading. The enhancements are available in Paint version 11.2508.361.0 or later.

Snipping Tool updates

The Snipping Tool, a staple for screenshots, is also gaining new functionality through a Quick Markup feature. This allows users to annotate directly while capturing content, rather than waiting until after the screenshot is saved. By pressing the Quick Markup button or using the Ctrl + E shortcut, users can highlight, draw arrows, or re-crop an image before saving the screenshot.

This improvement makes the process faster especially for those who frequently use annotated screenshots in presentations, chats or reports. Quick Markup is part of Snipping Tool version 11.2508.24.0 or later.

Notepad updates

Notepad, meanwhile, is being supercharged with AI capabilities. The app will support summarization, text rewriting, and content generation directly inside its editor. These features run locally for Copilot+ PC users, meaning they can function without a Microsoft 365 subscription or an internet connection. For those with subscriptions, cloud-based AI models also have the feature available, with the option to switch between local and cloud depending on performance needs. The AI-powered Notepad is currently available in English on version 11.2508.28.0 or later.

Bottom line

These updates highlight Microsoft’s strategy of blending familiar tools with advanced capabilities. Paint’s new project files and opacity controls cater to creative users who want lightweight design options without investing in complex software. The Snipping Tool’s real-time markup simplifies workflows for both students and professionals who rely on screenshots for documentation. Notepad’s integration of AI writing tools could transform it from a simple text editor into a versatile productivity assistant.

All three updates are currently limited to Windows Insiders, but their inclusion in testing channels suggests a wider release in future Windows 11 updates. By modernizing its classic apps, Microsoft is ensuring they remain relevant in an era where AI and productivity are increasingly intertwined.
