Epson Claims It’s Now Running on 100% Renewable Electricity

The printer and electronics company says all its global sites have been powered by renewables since 2023, and it's tweaking logistics to cut emissions further.

Global tech company Epson announced Monday that it has hit a major sustainability milestone, claiming that all of its group sites worldwide have been powered by 100% renewable electricity since 2023. The achievement, which covers all of the company’s production facilities, offices, and research sites, was highlighted as part of the second phase of its “Our Actions” environmental campaign.

According to the press release issued from Nairobi, this move makes Epson the first company in Japan’s manufacturing sector to achieve this goal across its global footprint. It’s a key step in the company’s ambitious plan to become carbon negative and stop using exhaustible underground resources like oil and metal by the year 2050.

Beyond the switch to renewable energy, Epson is also overhauling its logistics operations to reduce its carbon footprint. The company detailed several specific initiatives aimed at making its shipping and warehousing more efficient:

  • Smarter Shipping Containers: By switching to high-cube containers, the company increased its loading capacity by 14.3%, which reduces the total number of shipments required.
  • Alternative Fuels: A pilot program involving 100 shipping containers transported on vessels using biodiesel and green methanol reportedly cut carbon emissions by approximately 220 tonnes.
  • New Shipping Routes: The company opened a new east-coast shipping route to North America, a move it says has lowered emissions from overland transit by about 320 tonnes.
  • Green Warehousing: A new solar-powered warehouse has been launched in Türkiye, which also incorporates sustainable packaging and freight methods.

“At Epson, we do not believe in sustainability as a slogan. We see it as a daily responsibility,” said Mukesh Bector, Epson’s Regional Head for East and West Africa, in the provided statement. “Our transition to renewable electricity and our decarbonisation efforts in logistics are just two examples of how we are acting on that responsibility.”

The campaign frames these changes as part of Epson’s core philosophy of “efficient, compact, and precise innovation.” The company, which generates annual sales of more than JPY 1 trillion, is positioning these environmental initiatives as central to its business strategy for a low-carbon future.
