Microsoft has paused its KB5002907 update after some Office 2016 and Office 2019 installations lost activation or were removed from PCs. The update’s repair process left some devices without working Office applications.
The affected products include versions of Office bought outright. These are perpetual licences: a one-time purchase of a particular version, rather than the recurring subscription used for Microsoft 365.
For someone opening Word to finish a document, the result can be an activation prompt where a working application used to be. In other cases, the applications themselves are missing.
What the update was supposed to do
KB5002907 was intended to help Microsoft 365 Apps installations more than 90 days out of date resume updating. Microsoft 365 Apps is the subscription-based desktop software that includes Word and Excel. The package targeted Windows PCs on Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel, the update schedules assigned to those apps.
Although delivered through Windows Update, it is an Office-related package rather than a Windows operating system update. Microsoft says it does not install automatically.
Its support notice describes removals as rare, but gives no affected-device count or date for restarting the rollout.
Users reported missing applications
On 25th September, Microsoft Q&A user David Rommel reported that all his Office applications appeared to have disappeared after KB5002907 was installed the previous day.
In the same discussion on 26th September, user Radhika P said reinstalling Office 2019 from the Microsoft account associated with the purchase, then signing out and back in, restored access. These are individual accounts, rather than a measure of how many installations were affected.
How to recover your purchased copy
Microsoft’s instructions depend on whether Office is still installed. If it appears unlicensed, reactivate the purchased product. If it has been removed, reinstall that product.
To reactivate Office, you may need to sign in with the account associated with your purchase or follow the Office Activation Wizard. The correct route depends on how the licence was obtained.
To reinstall your purchased Office version, sign in to your Microsoft account dashboard with the account associated with that purchase. Find the purchased Office product and install it, then open an application to complete activation if prompted.
If you previously redeemed an Office product key and linked it to a Microsoft account, that account is the starting point for the download. Use the account associated with the Office purchase, rather than assuming any Microsoft sign-in will show the product you own.
Workplace installations can use different licensing arrangements. If your organisation manages Office, contact your IT department for its installation method. A personal account download may not be the right recovery method for those machines.
End of support does not mean your purchase expired
Office 2016 and Office 2019 reached the end of support on 14th October 2025. The applications remain usable, but Microsoft warns about security risks as the software ages.
Restoring activation does not put an older Office version back into support. Equally, that support deadline does not explain an installation suddenly disappearing after this update.
For affected owners, the immediate task is to restore the Office version already purchased. Microsoft’s recovery instructions point to that existing purchase; buying a new subscription is not a required recovery step.
