The vivo X Fold6 is no longer a China-only phone. vivo announced the global debut of its newest book-style foldable, the successor to last year’s X Fold5, on 30th September 2026. The next day, the X Fold6 went on sale in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Germany gets one version, with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, and it costs EUR 2,199 or about KES 323,000. On Tuesday 6th October, vivo India launched the same configuration at INR 219,999, about KES 296,000. Sales there start on 13th October.
A book-style foldable opens like a book. Shut, the X Fold6 is a phone with a 6.51-inch screen on the outside. Open, it’s an almost square 8.02-inch screen. vivo unveiled it in China on 26th June and began selling it there on 1st July. The international version runs OriginOS 7 Fold, vivo’s own software built on Android 17 and reworked for the larger screen.
vivo hasn’t announced it for Kenya. The company has sold phones here since 2019, and its Kenyan website lists seven phones today, the X300 Pro flagship among them. There’s no foldable on it, and no page for last year’s X Fold5 either.
That could change, going by vivo’s last flagship. The X300 Pro launched in China on 13th October 2025. It reached Europe on 30th October and India on 2nd December, as we traced when the X500 launched last month, and it reached Kenya on 19th December. The X Fold6 has now made the first three of those stops. vivo hasn’t named a fourth market, though, so for now the European and Indian prices are the only official reference a Kenyan buyer has.

What changed from the X Fold5
The biggest change is the chip. The X Fold5 used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, a chip Qualcomm announced in 2023. The X Fold6 moves to MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 Super Edition, a version of MediaTek’s flagship chip that vivo says it co-developed with MediaTek for this phone alone.
The main camera goes from 50 megapixels to 200 megapixels, on a Samsung sensor vivo says it specified with Samsung. The 3x telephoto camera uses Sony’s LYTIA 602 sensor. It is a periscope, which means a prism turns the incoming light sideways so the long zoom lens can lie flat inside a thin phone. The X Fold6 is also the first vivo foldable that works with vivo’s ZEISS Telephoto Extender Gen 2, a 153g lens that clips over the telephoto camera. With it fitted, the telephoto reaches the equivalent of 200mm, almost three times the 70mm it manages alone.
The battery grows from 6,000mAh to 6,900mAh while the phone barely gets thicker: 4.4mm open for the Prism Black version, against 4.3mm for the thinnest X Fold5. It’s heavier, 228g against 217g for the lightest X Fold5, and the Horizon Blue version is 4.8mm and 235g. vivo credits what it calls fifth-generation silicon anode technology. When a lithium-ion battery charges, the lithium is stored in the anode, one of the cell’s two sides. Anodes are usually graphite. Mixing silicon into the graphite lets the anode hold more lithium in the same space, which means the battery holds more charge without getting bigger. So an X Fold6 owner gets 15% more battery than an X Fold5 owner, in a phone of almost the same thickness.
vivo quotes three different capacity figures.
- In China, vivo sells it with an “equivalent” 7,000mAh battery.
- The international release says 6,900mAh, and
- vivo India’s spec page gives 6,900mAh as the typical capacity and 6,670mAh as the rated one.
Typical capacity is the average a batch of cells delivers. Rated capacity is the minimum vivo guarantees, so 6,670mAh is the least vivo promises. Last year the X Fold5 carried the same 6,000mAh figure in China and abroad. vivo hasn’t said whether the Chinese and international X Fold6 carry different cells.
OriginOS 7 Fold has two ways to split the open screen. Origin Workbench keeps one main app large with four smaller ones beside it, and Multi-Split Screen shows up to four apps side by side that you can resize. vivo’s own footnote says Origin Workbench needs 12GB of RAM or more, which every X Fold6 has. In practice, that means a video call and the document you’re discussing can share the 8.02-inch screen, so you aren’t switching back and forth.

Why it costs so much more outside China
vivo has priced the X Fold6 in three markets so far.
| Market | Configuration | Price | About |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | 12GB + 256GB | CNY 7,999 | KES 155,000 |
| China | 12GB + 512GB | CNY 8,999 | KES 174,000 |
| China | 16GB + 512GB | CNY 9,999 | KES 193,000 |
| China | 16GB + 1TB | CNY 10,999 | KES 213,000 |
| Germany | 12GB + 512GB | EUR 2,199 | KES 323,000 |
| India | 12GB + 512GB | INR 219,999 | KES 296,000 |
The 12GB and 512GB phone that Germany gets costs about USD 1,340 or KES 174,000 in China, so European buyers pay 85% more for it, and Indian buyers 70% more. Sales taxes explain only a small part of that. Swap China’s 13% VAT for Germany’s 19% VAT on a phone, or India’s 18% GST, and the Chinese price rises by about 5%. European buyers do get extras for the money: an extra year of warranty, five years of battery warranty and a year of screen-damage cover, plus a free vivo Watch GT 2 for orders placed by 31st October.
Indian buyers also pay a lot more than they did for the X Fold5. The X Fold5 went on sale there in July 2025 at INR 149,999, about KES 202,000, with 16GB of RAM. The X Fold6 costs INR 70,000 more, about KES 94,000, and has 4GB less RAM.
Both prices are above what Kenyans already pay for a foldable. Samsung sells the Galaxy Z Fold8 in Kenya from KES 243,900, as we noted when we compared it with the iPhone Duo last month. Apple’s iPhone Duo goes on sale on 23rd October and starts at USD 1,999, about KES 259,000 before import duty. vivo got its foldable onto European shelves three weeks before Apple’s goes on sale.
What vivo hasn’t said
vivo’s global release, its Indian release and vivo India’s product and spec pages are all silent on how many years of Android upgrades and security updates the X Fold6 will get. For the X Fold5, vivo India promised four major Android upgrades and five years of security updates. The global release also gives no prices and names no markets, and neither release mentions Kenya.
On paper, the X Fold6 is a better phone than the X Fold5 where owners will notice it: the chip, the main camera and the battery. Outside China it also costs 70% to 85% more than it does at home, and vivo hasn’t said how many years of updates that money buys. Until vivo lists the X Fold6 in Kenya, there’s no Kenyan price to set against the KES 296,000 to KES 323,000 it costs in India and Germany.
