Samsung Galaxy A20 Impressions!

As we all know Samsung said they would be bringing their A-series line of smartphones to Kenya a couple of weeks ago. Well, the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50 already launched and are available countrywide at very exciting prices. And now, “under” the A30, Samsung is introducing the Galaxy A20 which I have for review. The device will cost Ksh. 16,500 ONLY. A couple of other A-series devices will also be launched this week. As AndroidKenya already stated, Samsung is axing their Galaxy J series in favour of the new A-series, which not only look amazing, but are also offering so much more for much favourable prices.

Check out full specs of the device down below.

I’ll be hanging out with Galaxy A20 over the next weeks, so expect a full review detailing things I like or hate, and I will be able to answer any questions you may have about the device. Before that however, here are a couple of things that stand out about the Galaxy A20, and why it is an easy recommendation for me to anyone.

Best things about the Galaxy A20:

Design:

Yes the back is plastic, although Samsung prefers to call it Glastic because of the shiny, glossy finish, but that’s not a problem for me because it is a device that feels really premium. It isn’t very light, but neither is it heavy. The back curves are so nice. The Infinity-V notch is also very good looking, for real. This notch cut-out looks so good to me just because of the way it curves. Samsung’s stock lock screen wallpapers are also quite clever with how they hide the notch.

Display:

A Super-AMOLED display means a lot of good things in terms of general use of the device, and also in terms of battery life. Yes, this phone will give you more than amazing images, even if the resolution is 1560x720p. Samsung makes the best displays in the world, and even though this display isn’t of flagship status, there’s literally no other manufacturer with a Super AMOLED display at this price point.

Battery:

A 4000mAh battery plus a Super AMOLED display plus a 14nm processor means you should expect really good battery life on this phone. I hope this will be the case in real life and I will be sharing my stats in the full review.

Speaker, USB type-C, and headphone jack

ONE UI:

I thought this would look pretty awkward from the way people talked online about the new interface. Yes the icons are pretty big and funny looking, but the overall UI is really unique and well thought of. It is also very light. Thing I have already liked is dark mode. Which really is dark mode given this is an AMOLED display.

USB Type-C:

I think only the Nokia 5.1 Plus is around this price point with a USB type-C port. I am glad Samsung knows the future is type-C and they’re making you get a device you’ll be able to use in the future. I personally love type-C because it makes my work easier carrying only one charger for everything. I hope more companies put type-C ports on all their devices.

Little things:

  • The speakers sound great
  • Everything is so smooth, fast and responsive
  • That display is amazing!

Samsung has long been the budget underdog in Kenya. Which is funny because they used to own the market back in the days. Transsion Holdings took over market share by bringing in very affordable devices with really good prices with their Infinix and TECNO brand. This is all about to change now that both Samsung and Huawei are giving them a run for their money. You are about to see an influx of people getting Samsung phones, because this time round, the company is getting a lot of things right. The Galaxy A20 is testament.
