Airtel Launches Telesonic Fibre to Power Digital Africa

Airtel Africa has today announced the launch of Airtel Africa Telesonic Limited (‘Telesonic’), a new venture aimed at revolutionising the continent’s wholesale data market. Telesonic is set to leverage Airtel Africa’s extensive ground and submarine cable assets to meet the escalating demand for data services, offering a blend of terrestrial fibre and submarine cable solutions tailored for the wholesale segment.

With plans to set up local entities in key markets across Africa, Telesonic aims to streamline the management and operational facets of its wholesale business. This strategy is anticipated to yield long-term benefits not just for the telecom industry but also for the broader African community by enhancing quality of life and propelling economic growth.

Telesonic’s network boasts over 75,000 kilometres of terrestrial fibre, extending Airtel Africa’s reach across its 14 markets. Furthermore, the company has made strategic investments in the 2Africa submarine cable system, an ambitious project set to redefine connectivity between Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. As the largest submarine cable project interlinking 33 countries across these regions, 2Africa promises unparalleled connectivity and is expected to significantly impact sectors such as education and healthcare by improving access and efficiency.

The range of services offered by Telesonic includes national and international leased lines, dedicated internet access, IP and IP transit services, and MPLS services. This comprehensive portfolio underscores Airtel Africa’s commitment to fostering a digitally empowered Africa.

Segun Ogunsanya, Airtel Africa’s Group CEO, highlighted the initiative’s significance, stating, “The establishment of Airtel Africa Telesonic Limited underscores Airtel Africa’s commitment to addressing Africa’s needs for the digital revolution by providing cutting-edge fibre-optic solutions.” He further emphasized the importance of bridging the digital divide, particularly for the continent’s burgeoning youth population, and unlocking opportunities for innovation and economic development.
