Samsung yesterday unveiled its latest innovations in the foldable smartphone segment, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. These devices, introduced at the Galaxy AI Unpacked 2024 event held in Paris, showcase significant enhancements in design, functionality, and integration with Galaxy AI, promising to redefine user experiences across the globe and particularly in East Africa.
Galaxy Fold 6:
The Galaxy Fold 6 emerges as a powerhouse with its sophisticated dual-screen design that caters to both professional and personal use. Its main screen is a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, and it features a 6.3-inch cover screen, both offering a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate for smooth scrolling and animation. Enhanced durability is a key feature, with the use of Armor Aluminium and Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus® 2, making it the “most rugged foldable yet”.
Photography enthusiasts will find the triple rear camera setup—comprising 12MP Ultra-Wide, 50MP Wide-angle, and 10MP Telephoto cameras—exceptionally versatile. The device also includes a 10MP cover camera and a 4MP under-display camera, enhancing its utility for video calls and selfies.
Under the hood, the Galaxy Fold 6 is powered by the Snapdragon® 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, ensuring peak performance with improved AI processing, graphics, and a new cooling system that includes a larger vapour chamber. This setup is ideal for intensive tasks and gaming.
The AI capabilities of the Galaxy Fold 6 are extensive, with features like Note Assist for auto-transcribing and summarising in Samsung Notes, and the new Gemini app integration that provides AI-powered assistance across various Google apps.
In terms of pricing, the 256GB model of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be available in Kenya for KES 264,000.
Galaxy Flip 6:
The Galaxy Flip 6 is designed for those seeking style without compromising functionality. It features a 6.7-inch main screen and a 3.4-inch cover screen, both Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays. The Flip 6 is also equipped with the same Snapdragon® 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform as the Fold 6, ensuring robust performance.
The camera system includes a new 50MP wide sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, with enhancements for low-light photography and social media integration, directly benefiting platforms like Instagram.
AI is deeply integrated into the Galaxy Flip 6 as well, with features such as FlexCam for hands-free photography and suggested replies for quick messaging.
This model will retail at KES 148,000 for the base model in Kenya, making it a premium yet accessible option.
Complementary Ecosystem: Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro
Accompanying the foldables are the Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, which integrate seamlessly with the new smartphones. These earbuds are designed to enhance the audio experience, featuring Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Adaptive EQ, and new microphones that optimise sound quality in real-time.
Samsung says it has kept its commitment to sustainability with the use of recycled materials across the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, as well as in the packaging which is made from 100% recycled paper material.
The Galaxy Z series devices are available in various colors and configurations, ensuring that there is a model to suit everyone’s style and needs. Pre-orders in Kenya include special offers such as custom cases for early buyers.
