Kenya Government and Huawei Partner on Cloud Computing Security Training

The rapid adoption of cloud computing technology by governments, businesses, and organizations worldwide has become a necessity rather than an option. However, with this technological advancement comes the heightened risk of cyberattacks, data breaches, and other threats to security, privacy, and data integrity. Recognizing these risks, the Government of Kenya, in collaboration with Huawei, recently conducted a comprehensive Cloud Computing Security training program aimed at enhancing the cybersecurity capabilities of its officers.

The Necessity of Cloud Technology

During the official closing ceremony of the training program, Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo emphasized the critical role of cloud technology in modern governance. He noted that while cloud technology has significantly improved service delivery within the government, it has also introduced new challenges that must be addressed to safeguard the nation’s digital infrastructure.

“The adoption of cloud technology is no longer an option but a necessity for governments, businesses, and organizations globally,” Dr. Omollo stated. “However, with these advancements come heightened risks to data security, privacy, and integrity. Cyberattacks are becoming more sophisticated, and the need for robust cloud security measures has never been more critical.”

A Collaborative Effort to Enhance Cybersecurity

The Cloud Computing Security training, which benefited over 200 government officers, is part of a long-term collaboration between the Kenyan government and Huawei. This partnership aims to improve Kenya’s cloud computing security by equipping government officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement international cybersecurity standards effectively.

Mr. Steven Zhang, Huawei Kenya’s Deputy CEO for Public Affairs, highlighted that the training is an extension of previous initiatives focused on cybersecurity governance. “The collaboration builds on previous training sessions and is part of our commitment to helping Kenya enhance its cybersecurity infrastructure. We want to ensure that government officers are well-prepared to handle the complexities of cloud technology and cyber threats,” said Mr. Zhang.

Role of the National Computer and Cybercrime Coordination Committee (NC4)

The National Computer and Cybercrime Coordination Committee (NC4), operating under the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, coordinated the training. The NC4, established under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, is a multi-agency body responsible for overseeing all cybersecurity matters within the government. Its duties include the timely detection, prevention, response, investigation, and prosecution of cybercrimes.

The committee plays a vital role in ensuring that Kenya’s digital landscape remains secure and resilient against the increasing number of cyber threats. Dr. Omollo affirmed that NC4 is well-equipped to tackle any cyber risks that could potentially undermine the country’s efforts to improve efficiency and service delivery through digital means.

Cybersecurity: A Pillar of National Security and Economic Growth

Cybersecurity is not only crucial for national security but also for driving economic growth and fostering innovation across both public and private sectors. The digital economy is a key pillar of Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, with the government having automated over 19,000 services on the e-Citizen platform. This level of digital integration makes robust cybersecurity measures more essential than ever.

Dr. Omollo underscored the importance of strong cybersecurity frameworks to protect data, secure communication networks, and defend sensitive information from cyber threats. He pointed out that any lapse in cybersecurity could result in significant disruptions to the delivery of essential online services to the public.

“The skills acquired through this training will be instrumental in driving the government’s digitalization and e-services agenda. They will also be critical in safeguarding the country’s digital landscape in line with the Computer and Cybercrime law,” Dr. Omollo stated.

Empowering Government Officers

The recent training program marks a significant step forward in empowering government officers to take charge of building secure and resilient digital environments. As Dr. Omollo addressed the graduating cohort, he reminded them of the dynamic nature of technology and the continuous need to update their skills to stay ahead of emerging cyber threats.

“To the graduates, you are now part of a community of government experts empowered to take charge in building secure and resilient digital environments. However, it is crucial to continue updating your skills as technology evolves,” Dr. Omollo advised.

Huawei’s Commitment to Kenya’s Digital Security

Mr. Zhang expressed gratitude to the Government of Kenya for considering Huawei a trusted partner in its digital economy and cybersecurity efforts. He reiterated Huawei’s commitment to providing secure, trustworthy, and high-quality products while continuing to build capacity within Kenya.

“Huawei is dedicated to supporting Kenya’s digital transformation journey. We will always provide secure, trustworthy, and high-quality products whilst improving the capabilities of our people and our partners because cybersecurity is always evolving, and we want to help build capacity in Kenya,” Mr. Zhang concluded.

Conclusion

As Kenya continues to embrace digital transformation, the collaboration between the government and private sector partners like Huawei is crucial in ensuring that the nation’s digital infrastructure remains secure and resilient. The Cloud Computing Security training program is a testament to Kenya’s proactive approach to cybersecurity, equipping its government officers with the necessary skills to protect sensitive data, secure communication networks, and drive innovation across the public and private sectors. By prioritizing cybersecurity, Kenya is positioning itself as a leader in the digital economy while safeguarding its national security and promoting sustainable economic growth.
