Kenyan students showcased exceptional talent and innovation at the recently concluded LEAP Digital Talent Study Camp in Shenzhen, China. The week-long program brought together participants from across Sub-Saharan Africa, equipping them with advanced digital skills and fostering leadership through technical courses and competitions.
The camp featured training in 5G and 5.5G technologies, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud computing, and leadership development. The highlight of the event was the Tech4Good competition, where teams from different countries developed tech-driven solutions for societal challenges.
Kenyan Team’s Success with Mafreeco Innovation
Kenya was represented by 10 university students divided into two teams. One of the Kenyan teams made it to the Tech4Good finals with their innovative project, Mafreeco. The name, derived from the Swahili term “mafuriko” (floods), refers to a smart system designed to mitigate Kenya’s recurrent flooding problems by clearing drainage systems of trash and debris. This project aims to reduce flood damage and improve disaster preparedness in affected regions.
Ashley Yigo, a member of the Mafreeco team, expressed her excitement about the experience:
“The week was incredibly exhilarating, especially when our group advanced to the finals despite working with just 1-2 hours of sleep a day to execute our project to perfection. It was an invaluable experience, gaining global insights into technology and networking. It was also great meeting other students from around the continent.”
The Kenyan team competed against outstanding projects from South Africa, Mauritius, and Malawi in the finals, showcasing their creativity and technical prowess.
