Huawei and Safaricom Empower Kenya’s Future ICT Leaders at Decode 3.0

Huawei Technologies Kenya participated in Safaricom Decode 3.0, a premier career and networking event aimed at bridging the gap between academia and the job market. The event, which brought together industry leaders, students, and aspiring professionals, focused on equipping young talent with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in the digital economy.

Huawei’s Role in Digital Talent Development

Michael Kamau, Head of Huawei ICT Academy, was a key speaker at the event, sharing insights on mentorship and career growth. He highlighted Huawei’s continued investment in nurturing young talent through flagship programs such as:

  • Huawei ICT Competition – A global platform where students showcase their skills in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and networking.
  • Seeds for the Future – A talent development program exposing students to emerging ICT trends.

Kamau stressed the importance of early industry engagement, stating,

“Some of the best professionals in the job market today began networking with technology companies before graduating. This exposure is essential for success.”

He encouraged students to participate in industry-sponsored programs, pursue professional certifications, and take advantage of mentorship opportunities.

Huawei’s Management Trainee Program

Huawei HR Specialist Zakaria Kirui introduced attendees to entry-level opportunities at Huawei Kenya, including the Huawei Management Trainee Program (HMTP). Running annually from July, HMTP focuses on developing technical and leadership skills through:

  • Hands-on product training
  • Exposure to Huawei’s business domains
  • Practical project experience

Safaricom’s Commitment to Digital Talent

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa emphasized the company’s dedication to empowering young Kenyans in the digital economy:

“Safaricom Decode 3.0 reflects our commitment to equipping youth with the skills, networks, and opportunities they need to excel.”

By fostering collaboration between academia and industry, Decode 3.0 reaffirmed its goal of nurturing Kenya’s future technology leaders.

Kenya’s Rising Stars in Huawei ICT Competition

Huawei Kenya recently hosted 18 top-performing students for an intensive training program in preparation for the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Final of the Huawei ICT Competition 2024-2025. These students, drawn from institutions such as:

  • Moi University
  • Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)
  • Machakos University
  • University of Nairobi
  • Africa Nazarene University
  • Mount Kenya University

will represent Kenya at the regional finals in March and the Global Finals in May 2025. Training sessions focused on networking, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, ensuring they are well-prepared to compete at the highest level.

Additionally, 21 exceptional students—including three from Egerton University—will compete in the Innovation Track at the Southern Africa Regional Final in South Africa on April 4, 2025, with a chance to advance to the Global Final in Shenzhen, China.
