Safaricom has launched two new mobile plans specifically designed for Kenya’s boda boda riders and online ride-hailing drivers, bundling connectivity with a suite of financial and safety benefits. The new plans, named ‘Ofa Ya Boda Boda’ and ‘Bundle Ya Deree’, are a strategic move by the telco to address the unique operational challenges faced by the country’s massive transport gig economy.
At the core of the new offering is a significant data feature: drivers and riders who subscribe will get free access to essential navigation and ride-hailing applications. This means that using apps like Google Maps or their specific taxi apps will not consume data from their main bundle, a major pain point and a constant cost for those who rely on these tools for their livelihood.
Beyond the data, Safaricom has integrated several value-added services aimed at improving the financial security and well-being of the operators. The packages include subsidized insurance cover from accidents, illness, or loss of income, directly addressing the high risks associated with their work.
Furthermore, drivers on the ‘Bundle Ya Dere’ plan are set to receive fuel discounts. Through a partnership with Vivo Energy Kenya, the operators of Shell fuel stations, these drivers will soon be eligible for discounts on Shell FuelSave Unleaded and V-Power every Friday, helping to mitigate the rising cost of fuel.
“We understand the challenges faced by Kenyans in the transport sector, especially with the rising cost of operations,” said Patrick Masinde, Retail Manager at Vivo Energy Kenya. “Through our partnership with Safaricom, we aim to ease this burden.”
Safaricom is also including financial and digital literacy training through its ‘Safire Connect’ forums, which will cover topics like entrepreneurship, digital skills, and road safety.
This move sees Safaricom targeting a critical segment of the Kenyan economy. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) 2025 Economic Survey, the transport sector accounted for 4.4% of the country’s GDP in 2024. With over 1.4 million registered motorcycles, the boda boda sector alone creates over a million direct jobs and generates an estimated KES 1 billion in daily income.
“Our purpose is to transform lives,” said Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business Officer at Safaricom PLC, explaining that the new plans are designed to provide connectivity, safety, and financial tools to this vital sector.
By combining connectivity with practical, cost-saving benefits like fuel discounts and essential insurance, Safaricom is positioning itself as a comprehensive partner for transport operators, moving beyond being just a network provider.
