Safaricom’s M-Pesa Foundation has announced it is investing KES 120 million to construct and equip a new innovation hub at Maseno University. The project, designed to benefit over 27,000 students, is part of the foundation’s wider “Citizens of the Future” program aimed at bolstering digital skills in Kenya.
The new hub is set to be a significant upgrade for the institution. According to the foundation, the investment will cover the construction of the building and outfit it with 323 computers, two computer laboratories, a specialized ICT lab, and dedicated startup pods for fledgling companies. It will also feature two business incubation centers and multiple collaboration spaces for students to develop and share ideas.
In a statement, M-Pesa Foundation Trustee John Ohaga said the project is focused on preparing students for the modern economy. “This investment will go a long way in fostering digital learning outcomes at the institution as we mould our learners to be future-ready for the job and skills market,” he said.
This initiative is the latest in a series of educational investments by Safaricom’s foundations. The company has recently backed a scholarship program at the University of Embu and funded several technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programs across the country, focusing on embedding digital literacy into a range of practical courses.
