Chromecast with Google TV (4K) October update finally fixes live IPTV playback issue

After nearly a year of maddening video playback issues that crippled live TV streaming for countless users, the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) is finally getting some relief. The device’s first major security patch in months, the October 2025 update, is reportedly resolving the long-standing IPTV playback bug that has plagued owners since the initial Android 14 rollout.

The new firmware, identified as UTTC.250917.004, is currently rolling out and delivers an overdue security patch, ending a 10-month drought for new security updates on the streaming dongle.

The trouble began with an ill-fated Android 14 update that was quickly pulled due to various issues. Although Google re-released the update in June, it carried the outdated January 2025 security patch and, crucially, failed to fix a critical bug affecting live TV services.

The new update, clocking in at over 760MB for some and about 124MB for others, moves the device’s Android 14 base to the October 2025 security patch. While the official changelog only notes:

Green Holidays
  • Security patch updates to October 2025
  • System stability and improvements

It’s the anecdotal reports from the community that are making the real news.

The IPTV/Live TV nightmare is over

The most significant takeaway is the user-reported fix for the persistent live TV playback issue. This bug, which arrived with the initial Android 14 update back in March, caused live stream playback, particularly for IPTV apps and certain DVB-C streams, to exhibit debilitating issues like slow motion video, judder, and audio out-of-sync.

The core of the problem, as community members identified, was a misinterpretation of video streams: specifically, 1080i@50fps H.264 streams being incorrectly treated as 1080i@60fps. This made the device, in the words of many frustrated users from months ago, “useless for months” for anyone whose TV provider relies on this common live TV format, particularly across Europe.

Google first acknowledged the issue in mid-June, asking users to send detailed feedback, and later stated in August that they had “identified the root cause and are actively working towards implementing a fix.”

Now, some users are confirming that the long-awaited fix has finally arrived with the UTTC.250917.004 build. After months of patience, or, for some, switching to alternative streaming devices, Chromecast owners can once again use their device for a primary function of any Google TV streamer: watching live television without stutter or lag.

How to get the update

The update is rolling out gradually to Chromecast with Google TV (4K) owners. You can manually check for the update by navigating to Settings > System > About > System update.

This successful fix marks a crucial step in stabilizing the 4K model, providing relief to a dedicated user base and restoring basic functionality that was unexpectedly broken by a major OS upgrade.
