A Change.org petition to incorporate the Kenyan Constitution, 2010, into the national school curriculum as a mandatory, examinable subject is gaining massive traction, reflecting a significant appetite among Kenyans for deeper constitutional literacy.

Filed approximately two months ago by Ng’ang’a Muigai, the petition, titled Katiba Shuleni 2026, went largely unnoticed outside a small circle until this week, when it suddenly picked up widespread traction across social media. Yesterday, it stood at just over 10,000 signatures. As of this morning, roughly 20 hours later, the number has already grown by 2,000+ new signatures, signalling that a significant number of Kenyans agree with the proposal.

The petition argues that the events of June 2024, where over 60 Kenyans lost their lives during pro-constitution protests, showed a renewed public demand for constitutionalism, with people literally carrying copies of the constitution in the streets. Muigai says this is proof that Kenyans want the constitution respected, upheld, and defended. But many still lack proper understanding of what the document actually says.

To solve this, he proposes that Parliament pass a dedicated Katiba Shuleni 2026 Act, directing the Ministry of Education and KICD to integrate the Constitution as a standalone subject beginning in the 2026/27 financial year. According to the petition, this would strengthen accountability, patriotism, national security, job opportunities, and even fight tribalism by ensuring nationwide constitutional literacy.

Of course, as with most Change.org petitions, there’s no guarantee of real policy impact. But the surge in signatures clearly shows the idea resonates with many Kenyans. And honestly, the sentiment is relatable for anyone who wishes they had been taught constitutional rights and responsibilities much earlier in life.

So now we want to hear from you.

Do you agree with the petitioner’s proposal to make the Constitution of Kenya a mandatory examinable subject from primary through tertiary education?
