At Techish, CapCut is a key part of our daily content creation. Whether we’re captioning shorts or applying visual polish post-Final Cut Pro, it’s part of the workflow. So when Instagram quietly launched a full-on CapCut competitor called Edits, we paid attention.
Now that it’s officially available globally on Android and iOS, here’s the big question: can Meta’s Edits really take on TikTok’s editing giant?
Where Creators Already Are: CapCut’s Stronghold
CapCut isn’t just a video editor — it’s the video editor for millions of creators. It powers TikToks, YouTube Shorts, and even Instagram Reels. From built-in templates and effects, to precise control over captions, speed, audio, transitions, and more — CapCut feels like second nature to a whole generation.
And that’s the point. For many creators, CapCut is all they’ve ever known. It works. It’s fast. It’s integrated directly with TikTok. And on top of that, it offers a desktop app for Mac and Windows, with Pro-level features behind a paywall for those who need more firepower.
We use both the mobile and desktop versions here at Techish, and the truth is: it complements even our high-end production setups. If a free app is good enough to be part of a Final Cut Pro workflow, it’s not just for hobbyists.
What Instagram Edits Offers
Instagram Edits is Meta’s counterstrike. It’s a standalone app, not built into the Instagram UI, and it’s loaded with creator-first tools. You get:
- Up to 10 minutes of camera capture in-app
- AI-powered animations
- Cutout tools to isolate subjects in your video
- Green screen editing, background noise removers, and auto-captions in multiple languages
You also get a Live Insights Dashboard that gives you metrics like engagement and view duration — right inside the app.
Most importantly: no watermarks on exported videos. You can share anywhere. Not just Instagram or Facebook.

The Big Problem: Instagram’s Identity Crisis
Even if Edits is impressive, it carries a problem that goes beyond features: Instagram doesn’t know what it wants to be anymore.
It used to be the go-to place for photos. Now it’s a mishmash of Reels (short? long?), Stories, Lives, and oddly placed shopping tabs. IGTV died off. Story uploads still feel clunky. And Reels? Even those can’t be boosted (as ads) unless they meet arbitrary time restrictions — a huge problem for businesses.
Meanwhile, TikTok is laser-focused. It’s algorithm is still unmatched. It learns you. It rewards quality fast. That focus is part of why CapCut works so well — it’s clear, purpose-built, and tuned to the exact kind of videos that go viral.
Can Edits Really Win?
Edits has one big advantage: it’s new, it’s free, and it’s clean. If Meta continues to improve it — adding desktop access, deeper AI, Pro controls, and better sharing options — it might slowly chip away at CapCut’s dominance.
But Meta will need more than features. It’ll need to fix Instagram’s core problems, earn back creator trust, and prove that this isn’t just another project that will disappear like IGTV.
Because right now, CapCut owns the space. And we’re curious — maybe even excited — to see how Bytedance will answer this challenge. Will CapCut evolve faster? Add more desktop features? Cut prices on Pro? Let’s see who moves next.
