If you have scrolled through WhatsApp status updates or Facebook feeds in the last 48 hours, you have likely seen “leaked” screenshots claiming the 2025 KCSE results are out.

You can stop refreshing the KNEC portal.

Following a wave of speculation and viral misinformation, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has reportedly come out to clear the air, confirming that the official release of the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results is scheduled for next week.

Below is one such fake news:

According to reports circulating online, CS Ogamba addressed the confusion while speaking at the Omogusii Cultural Festival in North Mugirango last December.

The CS confirmed that the Ministry of Education is sticking to the recent tradition of releasing secondary school exam results in January. Specifically, the results are expected in the second week of January 2026, likely before January 15.

"The KCSE examination results will be released within the next two weeks. Traditionally, KCSE results are announced in January, and we are keeping to that tradition." — Education CS, Julius Ogamba.

This timeline aligns perfectly with the recently confirmed 2026 opening dates and Grade 10 reporting timeline, ensuring that students transitioning to higher education or other institutions have a clear calendar.

The clarification from the Ministry was necessitated by a sophisticated piece of fake news that went viral over the New Year weekend. A doctored screenshot purportedly showed that Kapsabet Boys High School had topped the national exams. KNEC also warned Kenyans about another grade fixing scam that was doing rounds in WhatsApp groups, as captured below.

However, there were two glaring issues with the “leak”:

  1. Ranking is banned: The Ministry of Education has an existing official policy that strictly prohibits the ranking of schools to curb unhealthy competition.
  2. No official announcement: No results had been transmitted to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) portal.

CS Ogamba allegedly dismissed these rumours, stating, “Treat such fake and misleading news with the contempt it deserves.”

Why the Confusion? (The KCPE factor)

For decades, Kenyans were accustomed to a major examination release in late December. The CS previously noted that the silence in December caused anxiety, likely leading to the rumour mill spinning out of control.

"The examinations previously released in December were KCPE results," Ogamba explained. "This year [2025], we did not have that examination following the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), and this may have caused confusion."

While multiple local sources and online platforms are carrying these quotes from the CS, it is worth noting that the major mainstream media houses have been uncharacteristically quiet on this specific announcement. We’ve also been unable to trace the original sources of these quotes. As such, we recommend taking the specific “date” with a grain of salt until KNEC issues a press invite.

However, the logic holds up. In January 2024, the 2023 KCSE results were released in the second week of the month. This was also true in January 2025, when the 2024 KCSE results were announced in the second week of the month. The Ministry is a creature of habit, and with marking concluded in mid-December, a mid-January release is the most technologically and logistically sound prediction.

For now, ignore the WhatsApp screenshots. The real results are still days away.
