Google Pixel phones finally get 5G in Nigeria, thanks to Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2

Owning a Google Pixel in Africa has always been a bittersweet experience. On one hand, you get the cleanest Android experience and stellar cameras. On the other, you are effectively on your own: no official warranty, no local repairs, and—perhaps most frustratingly—arbitrary software locks on features that work perfectly fine on competitors’ devices.

Chief among these missing features is 5G. While Apple and Samsung devices imported into “unofficial” markets connect to local 5G networks without a hitch, Google has historically disabled 5G on Pixel phones in countries where they aren’t officially sold. However, that narrative is finally shifting for users in West Africa, as the latest Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2 update appears to have silently enabled 5G support in Nigeria.

The 5G struggle on African Pixel phones

For years, Pixel enthusiasts in Africa have had to settle for LTE speeds, even while standing directly under 5G towers. Google’s policy has effectively been to whitelist 5G capabilities only for carriers in regions where they have an official retail presence.

This has always been a point of contention. If you import an iPhone into Nairobi or Lagos from the US, 5G works out of the box. Buy a Pixel, and you are often stuck in the slow lane. This limitation has made recommending Pixels difficult for power users, despite the hardware being capable.

Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2 brings a surprise

According to reports surfacing on Reddit, the tide is turning. Users running the newly released Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2 are reporting that their devices are finally connecting to 5G networks in Nigeria.

One user on the r/android_beta subreddit confirmed that after “forever” without high-speed connectivity, the new beta update flipped the switch.

Digging into the details, the enabling factor seems to be an update to the Carrier Settings. One user who successfully connected to 5G noted their Carrier settings version updated to mtn_ng-75000000001.23 2025-11-12.

This string specifically points to MTN Nigeria, suggesting that Google has finally added the necessary carrier configurations for the network in this specific beta build.

Not a continent-wide rollout yet

While this is massive news for the Nigerian tech community, the rollout doesn’t appear to be a blanket unlocking for all of Africa just yet.

In the same thread, other users shared less optimistic results. A Pixel user on the Ooredoo network in Algeria reported they are still stuck on 4G despite installing the same QPR3 Beta 2 update. Similarly, a user in Egypt confirmed they are still without 5G access.

This development sets a promising precedent. If Google is willing to whitelist carrier profiles for MTN Nigeria, it opens the door for other major African carriers to be included in future updates.

For now, if you are rocking a Pixel in Nigeria, it might be time to enroll in the Android Beta program. For the rest of us in unofficial markets, we can only hope this is the start of Google treating its global fanbase—official or otherwise—with a bit more parity.
