The race to the bottom (in terms of thickness, at least) is officially back on. While the tech world has been buzzing about the iPhone Air and its insane 5.6mm profile, TECNO has quietly stolen the spotlight at MWC 2026.
Building on the foundation of last year’s Spark Slim, TECNO has unveiled the Spark Slim 2, a device that pushes the boundaries of smartphone engineering to an almost uncomfortable degree of thinness. This comes after TECNO showcased another wild modular smartphone concept at the same event.
Thinner than the iPhone Air
According to the official press release and hands-on coverage from MWC 2026, the TECNO Spark Slim 2 measures in at just 5.49mm. To put that into perspective, that is thinner than the 5.6mm of Apple’s iPhone Air and significantly sleeker than the 5.93mm retail version of the original Spark Slim. It’s also thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge.
The design isn’t just about the waistline, though. TECNO is also claiming the title for the world’s slimmest bezel on a smartphone, featuring a symmetrical 0.7mm ultra-narrow bezel. Looking at the teaser materials, the screen-to-body ratio looks futuristic, with the AMOLED panel blending seamlessly into the frame.

Ceramic build and impossible battery tech
One of the biggest concerns with ultra-thin phones is structural integrity. TECNO is addressing this by moving away from traditional plastics or standard aluminum in favour of a ceramic unibody. As noted by Unbox Philippines during their MWC hands-on, the ceramic body gives the prototype a solid, dense feel that belies its slimness.
However, the most shocking spec isn’t the thickness. It’s the battery capacity. Despite being only 5.49mm thick, the TECNO Spark Slim 2 manages to pack a massive 6,150mAh battery, up from the 5,160mAh unit in the original Spark Slim. How TECNO managed to fit 6,150mAh into this chassis suggests a massive leap in battery density or a very clever internal layout.
A dot-matrix display for your emojis

Around the back, the Spark Slim 2 features a distinctive camera visor that sits slightly proud of the ultra-thin body. Inside this visor is a 50MP main camera paired with an AI lens and a secondary 13MP sensor.
The real party trick, however, is the dot-matrix display embedded in the visor. Much like the Glyph interface on Nothing phones but with a more literal display approach, this dot-matrix screen can show various emojis and notifications. In images shared from the MWC floor, the visor is seen displaying “winking” eyes, adding a layer of personality to the hardware.
TECNO Spark Slim 2 specs
The “About Phone” screen from the MWC prototype reveals a surprisingly capable mid-to-high-range internal setup:
- Processor: MediaTek Dimensity 7100 (5G-ready)
- RAM: 8GB physical RAM + 5GB Virtual RAM (13GB total)
- Storage: 256GB
- Display: AMOLED with a 1256 x 2760 resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, and a staggering 4,500 nits peak brightness.
- Software: HiOS 16.1.0 based on Android 16
- Camera: Dual 50MP +13MP AI lens on the back

When can you buy it?
While the Spark Slim 2 was showcased as a concept at MWC 2026, history suggests it won’t stay a concept for long. The original Spark Slim followed a similar trajectory, debuting as a concept before hitting the retail market later that year.
For Kenyan consumers, this represents a bold alternative to the premium flagships from Apple and Samsung. If TECNO can maintain its aggressive pricing while offering a build that is objectively thinner and more bezel-less than the iPhone Air, the Spark Slim 2 could be a disruptive force in the market later this year.
