TECNO made a lot of noise at MWC 2026 with the CAMON 50 series launch, heavily leaning into its new practical AI features and flagship-grade camera hardware. But tucked away in the spec sheets and press releases is a software commitment that warrants a closer look: a promise of 3 generations of Android OS updates stretched over a 5-year support window.
According to TECNO’s marketing pitch:
“The CAMON 50 Series said we’re not upgrading every year; 5-Year, 3-Generation Android OS updates locked in. With CAMON 50 Series and built-in TECNO AI, your phone doesn’t just keep up… it levels up with you.”
It sounds great on a billboard, but for anyone who closely tracks Android rollouts, the math here feels less like a flex and more like a carefully calculated cushion.
Google operates on a strict annual release cycle for Android. This year’s Android 17 is already out in public beta and should be available in stable mid this year. The CAMON 50 series ships out of the box with HiOS 16, based on the current Android 16. A guarantee of three Android OS upgrades means the device will eventually see Android 17, 18, and 19.

However, spreading three OS updates across a five-year lifespan is a telling strategy. TECNO is notorious for its sluggish software update pacing. By extending the window to half a decade, the company is effectively buying itself time and insulating itself from criticism. If Android 19 drops in 2028 or even 2029, TECNO has until 2031 to deliver it and still technically fulfill its 5-year promise. By the time that final OS update arrives, the CAMON 50 will be a five- or six-year-old relic.
It’s a smart corporate safeguard, but buyers shouldn’t expect day-one Pixel-style updates. You will get the updates, but you will likely be waiting a while for them.
