Sony Xperia design belongs in the bin, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day just proved it

Spider-Man finally found a phone that folds easier than Sony’s mobile strategy.

Samsung Galaxy S26

As someone who has caught every midnight screening and obsessed over every variant of the wall-crawler, I’ve spent years tolerating the most unrealistic part of the Spider-Man movies: Peter Parker’s choice of phone. For years, we’ve watched him dutifully whip out Sony Xperia devices. It made corporate sense, given that Sony owns the film rights, but it never made superhero sense.

In the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it seems the multiverse has finally corrected itself. Peter Parker has been spotted using a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 in the latest trailer, and honestly, it’s the most relatable thing he’s done since struggling to pay rent. It appears even Marvel’s flagship hero realized that the Sony Xperia design language belongs in a 2005 time capsule alongside low-rise jeans and dial-up internet.

There is a delicious irony in Sony Pictures, a wing of the same conglomerate that makes Xperia, admitting that their hero is better off with a rival brand. It’s a silent concession that while Sony’s mobile strategy has been folding for years, Samsung’s actually works.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a masterclass in what a modern Spidey-phone should be. This phone is packing an improved Armor Aluminum frame and a refined hinge that makes it significantly more durable. For someone who spends their days taking 50-foot tumbles and dodging pumpkin bombs, a rugged, pocketable foldable is a literal lifesaver.

For fans, expect a Spider-Man Edition of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 at some point this year.

Why the Galaxy Z Flip 7 wins

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 shines where the Xperia typically lacks: versatility. With its 4.1-inch cover screen, Peter can check notifications or coordinate with the Avengers without even unfolding the device. Then there’s “Flex Mode,” which essentially acts as a built-in tripod. It’s perfect for when he needs to web his phone to a brick wall to record evidence or a quick vlog for the Daily Bugle. Let’s face it: trying to prop up a long, slippery Xperia on a New York City ledge was always a disaster waiting to happen.

ICYMI, Samsung Kenya didn’t officially bring the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 to the local market last year. But for those in Kenya eager to match Spider-Man’s gear before you head into the theater for the next edition, it’s not a dealbreaker. Local retailers have these units in stock, ensuring that tech enthusiasts here aren’t left behind by official distribution maps.

It’s refreshing to see the franchise finally ditch the nostalgia-heavy bricks of the 2000s. Watching Spider-Man use an Xperia in 2026 would’ve felt like watching him use a pager. With the Z Flip 7, Peter Parker is finally living in the present, and I can’t wait to see how many web-swinging selfies he takes with it.
