TECNO’s HiOS 16 Rollout Plan Is Here. Is Your Phone on the List?

TECNO has officially shared its Android 16 rollout schedule, and this time it comes with a specific list of devices and a quarter-by-quarter timeline. The update will arrive wrapped in the company’s custom software layer, HiOS 16, which adds a range of new features on top of what Android 16 already offers.

The rollout was first teased in January 2026 and got a formal showcase at MWC 2026 in February. TECNO has now made the full schedule public through its HiOS Global Instagram account, giving users a clearer picture of what to expect and when.

Three waves, spread across the year

The rollout is split into three phases running through Q2, Q3, and Q4 of 2026.

The CAMON 40 series goes first, in Q2 (April to June). That covers the CAMON 40, CAMON 40 Pro, CAMON 40 Pro 5G, and CAMON 40 Premier 5G. If you own any of these, you are at the front of the queue.

Q3 (July to September) is where the update widens significantly. The CAMON 30, CAMON 30 Pro, CAMON 30 5G, CAMON 30S, and CAMON 30S Pro all come in this phase. The POVA 7 family joins too: the POVA 7, POVA 7 5G, POVA 7 Neo, POVA 7 Ultra 5G, POVA 7 5G Pro, POVA Slim 5G, and POVA Curve 5G.

The foldables close out the year in Q4 (October to December). The Phantom V Fold2 5G and the Phantom V Flip2 5G are confirmed for this final phase. That is a notable point. We reported last year that these same foldables were still stuck on Android 14 while cheaper phones had already moved to Android 15. The Phantom V Fold2 retails at around KES 134,999 and the Phantom V Flip2 at KES 82,000. For that kind of spend, being last in line for a software update is still a hard sell.

The fine print

TECNO is clear that this timeline is approximate, not guaranteed. Actual delivery depends on your region, device variant, and carrier certification. That means someone with the exact same phone in a different country could receive the update weeks earlier than you. The company says users can check for the update by going to Settings and navigating to System Update.

There is also an eligibility ceiling. Generally, only devices launched in 2024 or later qualify. If your TECNO predates that, it is not on the list.

What HiOS 16 actually brings

Beyond the version number, HiOS 16 introduces a new design approach TECNO calls “Superfluidity.” The focus is smoother animations and cleaner transitions throughout the interface. The Minus One screen, which is the panel you reach by swiping left from the home screen, has been redesigned into a central hub for productivity tools, smart services, and real-time translation.

The AI assistant, Ella, gets a meaningful upgrade with deeper system integration and better contextual awareness. It can help manage daily routines, summarise YouTube videos, and read and reply to WhatsApp messages hands-free.

On the performance side, App Flash Launch 2.0 speeds up how quickly apps open. Sensory Scheduling 3.0 manages system resources more intelligently. MemCompress helps squeeze more out of available memory. For gamers, there is a new Gaming Bypass Charging feature that routes power directly to the motherboard while the phone is plugged in, rather than cycling through the battery. The goal is to reduce heat build-up during heavy sessions. There is also a one-tap file transfer feature with iPhones that works without an internet connection, and a new multi-device management tool called OneLeap.

The bigger picture

TECNO has historically moved slowly on software updates, and that reputation has not disappeared overnight. Most competitors are already running Android 17 betas while TECNO’s Android 16 rollout is only just beginning. That said, publishing a structured, public roadmap is a step many budget brands skip entirely. It at least sets expectations clearly.

The real test will be execution. When HiOS 15 rolled out to the CAMON 30 series last year, it came with a wave of bugs including refresh rate problems, battery drain, and audio glitches that took multiple patches to address. HiOS 16 is a bigger update. There is more that can go right, and more that can go wrong.

If your device is on the list above, the wait is at least a known quantity now. If it is not, TECNO has drawn a clear line: 2024 and newer, or you sit this one out.
