MEST Africa Opens Applications for 2027 AI Startup Program

The Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) has opened applications for its 2027 AI Startup Program. This fully funded initiative targets promising African AI founders, aiming to equip them with the technical, business, and leadership skills needed to build globally competitive companies.

The program is structured around a seven-month training phase followed by a four-month incubation period. During the initial training, participants receive hands-on instruction and business coaching from global experts at organizations like OpenAI, Perplexity, Google, and Meltwater. The focus is strictly on developing practical, AI-powered solutions.

Startups that advance to the incubation phase spend four months refining their products and tightening their go-to-market strategies. The primary objective is to secure solid market traction. At the end of the incubation, founders pitch for a pre-seed investment of up to $100,000 (roughly KES 13.1 million) and join the MEST Portfolio.

We already covered MEST’s ongoing commitment to building the continent’s tech talent during their Class of 2025 Entrepreneurship Program. The 2027 intake builds on their inaugural AI cohort, which gathered founders from seven African countries. Emily Fiagbedzi, the AI Startup Program Director, notes that meaningful participation in the global AI economy requires the active ability to build, rather than just accessing tools.

Eligibility rules are specific. The program is open to founders based in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal. Applicants must be between 21 and 35 years old, possess software development experience, and show clear intent to launch an AI startup.

This program highlights the growing infrastructure to support deep tech ventures on the continent. MEST offers a structured approach that ensures founders have a clear pathway from product ideation to securing essential pre-seed funding. Interested candidates can apply via the official MEST portal.
