Google I/O Extended 2026 returns to Nairobi on June 20 after one year hiatus

The one-day meetup at Simba Corp Aspire Centre, Westlands, will unpack the major announcements from Google I/O 2026 and turn them into a hands-on community build-and-learn experience for developers and students in Nairobi.

After a one-year hiatus, the Google Developer Group (GDG) Nairobi has announced the return of Google I/O Extended Nairobi 2026 edition.

Scheduled for Saturday, June 20th, 2026, at the Simba Corporation Aspire Center in Westlands, the full-day event promises to bring the biggest announcements from Google’s main I/O conference in Mountain View directly to the local developer community.

For the uninitiated, Google I/O Extended events are community-led gatherings that bring the magic of Google’s flagship annual developer conference to local cities around the globe. They serve as a bridge, transforming the passive experience of watching a livestream into an active, collaborative environment where local techies can network, learn, and experiment with the newest tools.

The 2026 theme is “AI that acts”

Google I/O 2026, which wrapped up on May 20th, was defined by one major paradigm shift: moving away from AI that merely assists to AI that acts. According to the GDG Nairobi team, the local edition will unpack this exact transition. Attendees will spend the day deep-diving into the practical applications of Google’s newest tech stack. The key updates on the agenda include:

  • Gemini 3.5: The latest iteration of Google’s flagship multimodal AI model.
  • Antigravity 2.0: The highly anticipated update to the emerging framework.
  • Android 17: Exploring the newest features and APIs for mobile developers.
  • WebMCP: The new standard for web context protocols.
  • Firebase’s AI Studio Integration: Streamlining AI deployment for backend and app developers.

“We will spend the day unpacking, discussing, and building on them together,” the GDG Nairobi team shared in their announcement. “This event will transform the I/O experience from something you see online to an opportunity to learn and build on new technology.”

Who should attend?

Whether you are a seasoned engineer or a student writing your first lines of code, the event is built to be inclusive. GDG Nairobi explicitly welcomes developers across all experience levels. The sessions will be particularly relevant to:

  • Android and Web developers
  • Flutter engineers
  • AI/ML practitioners
  • Firebase and Cloud architects
  • Tech students looking to enter the industry

If you missed out on the last I/O Extended held in Nairobi back in July 2024, the community organizers have a reassuring message: Do not hold back or worry if this will be your first GDG Nairobi event, come learn and connect with the community.
