Airtel is giving 376 million subscribers in India a free year of Super Duolingo

Bharti Airtel and Duolingo announced a partnership on 3 September 2026. The agreement gives Airtel customers in India 12 months of Super Duolingo at no extra cost. Roughly 376 million users qualify.

Subscribers claim the subscription inside the Airtel app on Android or iOS, or through the rewards section of the Airtel Thanks app. No credit card details are required. Eligibility covers mobile, home broadband, and DTH television customers.

Duolingo is a language learning app. It teaches more than 40 languages, plus maths, music, and chess in short gamified lessons. The free version runs advertisements and caps how many mistakes a user can make. Super Duolingo removes the advertisements, gives unlimited energy, and adds AI-powered speaking practice and a personalised review of errors. In India, the premium tier normally costs between KES 5,300 and KES 8,800 a year.

The business logic

Duolingo reported 23% year-on-year growth in daily active users (DAUs) during its second-quarter 2026 earnings call. A telecom bundle buys distribution in a major market without immediate marketing spend. It puts a paid software tier in front of tens of millions of people who would not have paid for it directly.

Airtel has executed this exact strategy before. We already documented this playbook in July 2025, when Airtel India gave its customers a free year of Perplexity Pro. That offer allowed redemptions until 16 January 2026. Duolingo now fills the vacancy in the rewards application.

The Africa strategy

Airtel Africa is a separately listed company. It had 189 million customers across 14 markets as of 30 June 2026. Locally, Airtel Kenya held 23.2 million subscriptions and 27.6% of the market according to the Communications Authority’s March 2026 report.

None of those subscribers are covered by this partnership. The joint statement from Airtel and Duolingo does not mention Africa. The 2025 Perplexity Pro deal never crossed over to African markets either (but we were able to redeem and enjoy it nonetheless thanks to the Perplexity redeeming link).

Airtel Africa focuses its major partnerships on infrastructure rather than consumer software bundles. We reported in August 2026 when Airtel Africa turned on Starlink Mobile in the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking the first commercial satellite-to-phone service on the continent. For now, the software perks remain an India deal.
