Huawei has published the repair prices for the Mate XT 2, and a replacement screen assembly is CNY 7,999, about KES 154,200. The tri-fold went on sale in China this morning from CNY 19,999, about KES 385,600, so one screen repair is 40 per cent of what the cheapest Mate XT 2 costs new.
CNY 7,999 is the discounted price. Huawei charges it only if you leave the broken screen with the service centre, under a scheme where handing the old part over free of charge buys you a lower price on the new one. Keep the old screen and Huawei adds CNY 1,000, roughly KES 19,300. The discount covers phone screens and cameras, the old part has to be at least two thirds intact, and it runs in mainland China only.
What you are buying KES 154,200?
The screen assembly is three parts in one unit:
- the flexible inner panel,
- the middle frame and
- the battery.
The panel on its own is CNY 5,499, about KES 106,000. Huawei also sells an assembly at CNY 6,999, about KES 134,900, which it describes as working properly with slight cosmetic flaws. The 6.5-inch outer screen, the one you use with the phone folded shut, is CNY 1,599, about KES 30,800.
Lingdun, the hardware-level privacy screen Huawei launched with this phone, adds CNY 1,000 at every step. The privacy panel is CNY 6,499 and the privacy assembly is CNY 8,999, about KES 173,500.
Motherboards are the one part that can cost more than a screen. Huawei prices them by storage: CNY 6,099 for 16GB and 256GB, CNY 7,699 for 512GB, and CNY 9,299 for 1TB, about KES 179,300. That last board is 39 per cent of the CNY 23,999 the 1TB phone variant sells for.
What the other parts cost
A battery is CNY 499, about KES 9,600. The 50MP main camera is CNY 949, the periscope telephoto CNY 809 and the ultrawide CNY 369, with each of the two 8MP selfie cameras at CNY 379. A back cover costs CNY 399, or CNY 1,399 with the camera glass attached. Smaller parts run from CNY 131 for the charging port down to CNY 124 for the speaker, CNY 120 for the earpiece, CNY 93 for the fingerprint reader and CNY 11 for the SIM tray.
Both screen prices have gone up since the Mate XTs a year ago, when the panel was CNY 4,999 and the assembly CNY 6,999.
Every Mate XT 2 comes with one discounted inner-screen replacement in the first year, for a panel that cracks, splits or stops responding, and four free screen protector fittings on each screen over two years.
The Mate XT 2 runs HarmonyOS 7 with none of Google’s apps, it sells only in China. Both the parts prices and the old-screen discount apply in China. Import one to your area and you pay the part price plus the cost of getting the phone to a counter that sells it.
Huawei has not published parts prices for the CNY 29,999 stylus bundle, which goes on sale on 23 September.
