Apple released tvOS 27 on Monday, 14 September 2026, as build 24J361. It is free, and it installs on exactly two devices: the Apple TV 4K from 2021 and the Apple TV 4K from 2022.
tvOS is the software that runs Apple’s streaming box, the way iOS runs an iPhone. The Apple TV 4K is that box, a small black square that plugs into a television over HDMI and runs Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Apple’s own apps and whatever else you install from the App Store.
Two boxes get dropped
The Apple TV HD from 2015 and the first Apple TV 4K from 2017 do not get tvOS 27. They stay on tvOS 26 and stop getting new features. This is the first time Apple has left an Apple TV behind on a tvOS release, which is worth knowing before you buy a cheap secondhand unit.
Speed
Apple says the biggest update with tvOS 27 is that apps now launch up to 30% faster. There’s a quicker Control Centre, faster AirPlay connections to an Apple TV or HomePod, and faster audio handoff.
That 30% is the same figure Apple gave for iOS 27. It comes from a reworked CPU scheduler, the part of the system that decides which task gets processor time and in what order.
Podcasts and Apple Music
Apple rebuilt the Podcasts app with a sidebar, channels and video podcasts. Until now an Apple TV could only play the audio of a podcast that was shot as a video, which was a strange gap on a device attached to a television.
Apple Music now plays Hi-Res Lossless on the Apple TV 4K, in ALAC at up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Lossless means the file keeps every bit of the studio master instead of throwing some of it away to save space, which is what MP3 and AAC do. ALAC is Apple’s own lossless format. tvOS used to cap out at 24-bit/48 kHz.
There is a condition. Apple’s own support page says lossless on an Apple TV 4K needs the box connected to an AV receiver over HDMI. Your television’s own speakers will not show you anything. So if your Apple TV runs into a receiver and a set of real speakers, you get the higher-resolution files tonight. If it runs into the TV alone, this changes nothing for you.
Apple Music also adds AutoMix and Crossfade, which blend the end of one song into the start of the next, and playback starts faster.
Home App
You can now update an Apple TV from the Home app on an iPhone, without switching the box on and going through Settings yourself. Apple Home handles 4K camera recordings, and HomeKit Secure Video recordings are processed on the Apple TV rather than in iCloud. The written descriptions of what a camera saw, and searching through them, run on Private Cloud Compute, Apple’s servers that handle a request and then discard it instead of storing it.
Thread support moves to Thread 1.4. Thread is the low-power mesh network smart home gadgets use to talk to each other, and version 1.4 lets border routers from different brands behave as one network instead of several.
Subtitles
tvOS 27 can generate subtitles for video that has none, by transcribing the speech on the device itself. It comes with two restrictions .
- Hardware: It only runs on the Apple TV 4K from 2022, the one with the A15 Bionic chip. The 2021 box runs an A12 Bionic, gets tvOS 27, and does not get this.
- Region: Footnote four of Apple’s accessibility announcement in May reads: “Generated subtitles will be available in English in the U.S. and Canada.” Automatic translation of those subtitles into other languages is not in this release at all. So a Kenyan viewer with the right box still does not get it.
Smaller stuff
- Smart downloads come to the Apple TV app, which pulls episodes down before you sit down to watch.
- Settings gains an AppleCare and warranty section under General.
- Apps now ship with only the language packs you need, so they take less of the box’s storage.
- Apple has reworked remote and game controller pairing.
- And there is a new Apple TV Remote app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
What is missing is Siri with Apple Intelligence. The A15 chip in the newest Apple TV dates to 2021 and cannot run it, and a new Apple TV 4K has been rumoured for this year.
The TV box is expensive now
Apple raised the US price of the Apple TV 4K on 25 June 2026. The 64GB Wi-Fi model went from $129 to $199, and the 128GB Wi-Fi and Ethernet model from $149 to $249, which Apple blamed on memory and storage prices pushed up by AI data centre demand. That is roughly between KES 25,800 and KES 32,300 before shipping, duty and VAT. Nairobi resellers sit above that: Avechi lists the 128GB model at KES 34,999 today.
Apple TV, the streaming service, reaches Kenya this month through iCloud+ at no change to the price, after years of being locked out. So if you already own an Apple TV 4K, update it tonight and you get the faster interface, the new Podcasts app and the service, all in the same week.
