Google One Just Made Cloud Storage Way More Affordable in Kenya

Insights At a Glance:

  • Google One Lite plan (30GB) is now available in Kenya for KES 110/month.
  • New subscribers can get 100GB at KES 60/month and 200GB at KES 90/month for their first 2 months.
  • The AI Premium 2TB plan remains at KES 3,700/month with no discounts.

Late last year, Google quietly rolled out a new Lite plan for Google One in India offering a humble 30GB of cloud storage at an even humbler price. At the time, I remember thinking: this plan needs to come to Kenya. Heck, it needs to be available all across Africa.

And now? Well, surprise! It’s here. Not sure when it happened, but it’s here.

A Lite Plan for the Rest of Us

So there I was, in Nairobi, doing what many of us unofficial family tech support agents do best: sorting out my brother’s phone problems. His free 15GB Google storage was full, and the passive-aggressive reminders from Google were starting to sound personal. He didn’t know what any of it meant. He just wanted his photos to back up and for WhatsApp to keep working. Fair enough.

That’s when I stumbled across the Google One Lite plan on the Kenyan pricing page. The plan is priced at just KES 110 per month and gives you 30GB of storage. That’s double what you get on the free tier, and at a price that doesn’t feel like daylight robbery. Google even marks it as “Recommended” on their pricing page, which honestly makes sense. It’s perfect for people like my brother: folks who just need a bit more breathing room, not the entire Google Cloud universe.

Google One Has More Crazy Deals

While I was exploring Google One’s pricing in Kenya, I noticed something else. And trust me, this one’s juicy. If you’re signing up as a new Google One subscriber, Google is practically throwing storage at you for the first two months. What’s even better is you can share the storage with up to 5 others, be it family members or friends.

Here’s what’s on offer:

  • Basic Plan (100GB): Normally KES 250/month, but new users only pay KES 60/month for the first two months. That’s a total of KES 120 for 100GB storage and a KES 380 saving. After that, it reverts to the regular KES 250/month.
  • Standard Plan (200GB): Normally KES 380/month, but new users pay just KES 90/month for the first two months. That’s KES 580 in savings, and honestly, you could even use part of that saved cash to pay for your third month.
  • Premium Plan (2TB): Usually goes for KES 1,250/month, but is now available at KES 310/month for the first two months, saving you up to KES 1,880 during the offer period. Again, more than enough to cover the third month and still leave you with some change.

These are solid offers, especially in a world where many of us are struggling to make ends meet. However, not everything is on sale. The top-tier Google One AI Pro plan that includes 2TB storage and access to Gemini AI across Google products stays put at KES 3,700/month, even for new subscribers.

So unless you’re actively using Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets or you just like seeing a massive 2TB sitting unused, this plan may be overkill for most casual users.

Pick Your Cloud, but Pick Smart

The addition of the Lite plan is long overdue, and it’s heartening to see Google tailoring offerings to fit more price-sensitive markets like Kenya. At KES 110/month for 30GB, it’s arguably the best middle-ground between free storage and overkill. Perfect for your parents, siblings, or anyone who’s just not ready to commit to a full 100GB plan.

And if you are ready to go big? The first two months of the 100GB, 200GB, and 2TB plans are too good to ignore.
