Spotify Audiobooks go global: what Kenyan listeners get and what we don’t know yet

Spotify is bringing audiobooks to Kenya before the end of the year. The company announced the expansion on 7th October 2026 at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Audiobooks will go from 22 markets to more than 180 by the end of 2026, and Kenya is on the list. So are Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Egypt.

Until now, the books were limited to places like the US, the UK and Germany, plus South Africa, where Spotify started testing them last November. When audiobooks first came to Premium in 2023, we wished the rollout had been wider. Now it is. The question for Kenyan subscribers is whether the KES 419 a month they pay for Premium Individual will now include books. Mostly, it won’t.

How audiobooks on Spotify work

Spotify measures audiobooks in hours. In the US and the UK, Premium includes 15 hours of audiobook listening a month from a catalogue of more than 700,000 titles. Every minute you play counts against that allowance, whichever book it is. Unused hours expire at the end of the month, and if you run out early you can buy a 10-hour top-up.

So it works a lot like a data bundle. A short book uses a little of it and a long one uses more. Run out, and you top up or pay for a bigger plan. That’s why what you pay for on Spotify is listening time.

For the new markets, Spotify has split access three ways. In Italy, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Poland, Chile, Norway, Peru and others, eligible Premium subscribers will get 12 hours a month included in what they already pay. Across Africa, Asia and Argentina, Spotify says the “primary way” in is Audiobooks+, an add-on you pay for on top of your plan that adds more hours each month. Single books will be on sale too, to buy and keep, though availability varies by market.

So for Kenya, the main way in will be a paid add-on. The Premium plan you already have doesn’t change.

South Africa is, so far, the one African market where Premium includes hours. Spotify has put 12 hours a month into Premium Platinum, its top Premium plan in South Africa. Kenya doesn’t have a plan like that. Spotify sells Individual, Duo, Family and Student plans here, and Individual has cost KES 419 a month since February.

What it will cost in Kenya

Spotify hasn’t said. As of 8th October 2026, the Kenyan audiobooks page at spotify.com/ke-en/audiobooks sends you straight to the Premium plans page, which lists no audiobook option at all.

The only prices to go by are from markets where Audiobooks+ is already live. In the US it costs USD 11.99 a month, or about KES 1,600, for 15 extra hours. In the UK it’s GBP 8.99, or about KES 1,500. Both sit on top of Premium.

Those numbers don’t translate to Kenya, though. Premium Individual costs USD 12.99 in the US, or about KES 1,700, and Kenyans pay KES 419 for it, roughly a quarter of that. Spotify prices each country on its own, so the US add-on price says very little about what the Kenyan one will be.

Spotify’s post also leaves out a few things Kenyan listeners will want to know:

  • It gives no date for Kenya beyond the end of 2026.
  • It doesn’t say how many hours Audiobooks+ will add in African markets.
  • Its line that “Any listener can add Audiobooks+ to their plan” could include people on the free plan.
  • In the US, though, Spotify bills Audiobooks+ on top of Premium, and people without Premium get a separate plan called Audiobooks Access for USD 9.99, or about KES 1,300. The post doesn’t say which of these Kenya will get.
  • And among the new catalogues it names Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Polish, with no mention of Swahili or any other African language.

What Spotify gets out of it

Spotify says Audiobooks+ has signed up more than 1 million subscribers since it launched just over a year ago, and that it brings in more than USD 100 million, about KES 13 billion, in annual recurring revenue. That’s a year’s worth of subscription income at the current rate. On Spotify’s own count, monthly audiobook listeners grew nearly 40% over the past year and listening hours grew by more than 30%.

All of Spotify’s deals with publishers are non-exclusive. So a book on Spotify can also sell on Audible or anywhere else. The add-on also lets Spotify charge for books separately in markets where Premium is cheap, instead of folding their cost into a plan that costs KES 419 here.

For Kenyan listeners, that’s the trade. Subscribers in Italy and Brazil get 12 hours thrown in. Subscribers here get the option to pay for them. Whether that’s worth it depends on a number Spotify hasn’t published yet, the Kenyan price of Audiobooks+. If you already listen to audiobooks, the thing to compare it with is what you spend on them now. If you don’t, buying a single title once books go live lets you find out without a monthly bill.
