If you’ve ever found yourself stranded with no data, scrambling to buy a bundle just so you can… buy more bundles (how ironic), Airtel Kenya has some sweet relief for you: the My Airtel app now works even without an active data bundle. Yes, you read that right — you just need to turn on mobile data, and the app does its thing. No bundles required.
This silent but mighty update was rolled out recently, and I can confirm that the app works just as it should — check your balance, buy airtime, recharge for your fam, and more — even if your data balance is zero.
For those who’ve been following Airtel’s tech journey closely, this isn’t entirely out of the blue. Back in October 2024, Android Kenya reported that Airtel was cooking up an offline mode for the My Airtel app. Then came Airtel Lite in February 2025 — a zero-data, zero-storage progressive web app meant to make USSD feel like a relic. But while Airtel Lite was a step in the right direction, it had its limitations. It wasn’t the full-fat experience you get with My Airtel app.
Now, the real deal — the main My Airtel app — has caught up and gone data-free too. The difference? This isn’t a stripped-down web app. It’s the full application you’ve come to rely on, now untethered from your data balance.

This move puts Airtel a step ahead of Safaricom on this front. While the M-PESA app has offered offline functionality since 2021, the MySafaricom app still doesn’t. Meaning if you’re out of data and trying to do basic stuff on Safaricom’s app — tough luck.
Airtel, meanwhile, has been dropping updates like nobody’s business. In just the past few weeks alone, we’ve seen:
- A new 5G router deal that’s giving you faster speeds for less cash.
- AI-powered SMS spam and fraud filters to clean up your inbox.
- And even a partnership with Starlink (yes, that Starlink) to push satellite internet further into the continent.
It’s clear Airtel isn’t playing. The new offline access for the My Airtel app might seem small, but it’s the kind of quality-of-life improvement that makes a huge difference for users — especially in regions with patchy connections or in emergencies when buying data isn’t an option.
So next time your data runs out, don’t panic. Just open the My Airtel app. It’s got you. Literally.
