Showmax 2.0 Goes Live, Here’s Pricing and What to Expect!

Showmax has today moved to the new platform we were promised from 2023. This comes after a strategic ownership deal with NBC Universal, making Showmax 2.0 a member of the Comcast family. This relaunch includes fresh pricing, an updated logo, and a revamped user interface, all designed to elevate the streaming experience in Africa.

The technological backbone of the new Showmax comes from Peacock’s robust streaming platform, now active in over 70 countries and recognized for its capacity to deliver live and on-demand content seamlessly. This technology has been acclaimed for hosting large-scale events and was recently awarded a Technology and Engineering Emmy for sports viewing experiences.

Is the Premier League available on Showmax 2.0?

Yes. On mobile only though! The new platform introduces a pioneering standalone Premier League mobile plan, offering all 380 games live for just KES 500 a month. This move aims to tap into Africa’s massive football fan base and the widespread mobile usage across the continent.

Is 4K Streaming available with Showmax 2.0?

Despite the improvements, Showmax has not yet ventured into 4K streaming, opting to enhance its service to support 1080p quality. This decision reflects the reality of the current market, where 4K content is still not as widespread, particularly in regions where Showmax operates.

Also, you can still only stream on two devices at once for the full Entertainment ALL Devices tier.

The New Pricing for Showmax in Kenya is as follows:

PlanMonthly Price (KES)
Entertainment Mobile300
Premier League (mobile)500
Entertainment (all devices)650
Entertainment Mobile + Premier League (mobile)700
Entertainment (all devices) + Premier League (mobile)1000

The new prices are a significant drop, with the Showmax Entertainment plan now at KES 650, reduced from the previous KES 760. These competitive price points are part of Showmax’s strategy to solidify its position as a leading streaming service in Africa.

When will you get Showmax 2.0?

Showmax’s revamped app will be available from 23 January 2024, with a staggered migration across 44 markets expected to be completed by February. Existing customers will be informed about the transition process, ensuring a smooth changeover to the new service.

What new content should you expect?

The revamp is not just in pricing and quality but also in content. The new Showmax will produce over 1,300 hours of original content this year, increasing its output by a substantial 150% from the previous year. Moreover, partnerships with NBCUniversal and Sky guarantee a steady supply of international hits, further diversifying Showmax’s rich content offering.

This massive content lineup includes 21 new Showmax Originals set to launch in February alone, ranging from local African stories to global hits such as the latest ‘Fast X’ and the much-anticipated comedy-drama ‘Asteroid City’. The platform will also feature a plethora of series and films from Paramount and HBO, including new seasons of ‘House of the Dragon’, ‘The Last of Us’, and ‘The White Lotus’.

Calvo Mawela, CEO of MultiChoice Group, believes that “Nobody understands Africa like we do.” The new Showmax is set to redefine streaming on the continent with a service that prioritizes African consumers’ needs and preferences.
