Equitel Launches 5G in Kenya, a First for African MVNOs

Equitel has today announced the launch of its groundbreaking 5G services, making it the first successful MVNO in Africa to offer this advanced technology. This historic move, made possible through a partnership with Airtel Kenya, positions Equitel as a leader in the mobile telecommunications landscape. Finserve, the fintech subsidiary of Equity Bank, operates Equitel and demonstrates continued innovation with this 5G launch. The enhanced connectivity is poised to transform Kenya’s digital landscape, empowering individuals and businesses alike.

What are MVNOs?

MVNOs, or mobile virtual network operators, are companies that provide mobile phone services without owning their own wireless networks. Instead, they lease network access from a mobile network operator (MNO) such as Airtel or Safaricom. This allows MVNOs to offer competitive rates and flexible plans to customers.

MVNOs typically purchase wholesale network access from MNOs at a discounted rate. They then mark up the price and sell it to their own customers. MVNOs can offer a variety of services, including voice, data, and text messaging. They can also create their own unique plans and bundles to attract customers.
