Jumia has announced that Starlink’s Satellite internet services are now available for purchase in Kenya through its online marketplace. This collaboration between Jumia and Starlink is set to transform the digital landscape by offering high-speed, reliable internet access, especially in underserved regions.
In July 2023, Starlink commenced shipping to Kenyan customers. The post-launch phase saw users grappling with substantial costs for the residential kit – KES 89,000 for hardware, KES 3,100 for shipping, and a monthly subscription of KES 6,500. Now, through Jumia, the Starlink Residential Kit is currently available on offer for KES 39,500, a significant price adjustment aimed at making this technology more accessible to a broader audience.
Starlink has been running Ads on Kenyan socials about the massive 55% discount running to mid-May. It’s not clear whether or not the Jumia pricing will last post mid-May.
Starlink utilises a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide global internet coverage, focusing on areas where internet connectivity is unreliable or completely absent. This technology promises to deliver high-speed internet with low latency, ideal for video streaming, online gaming, and remote work, which are often challenging in many parts of Kenya.
The availability of Starlink kits on Jumia marks the second phase of a strategic alliance initially launched in Nigeria and now expanded to Kenya. This move leverages Jumia’s vast logistical network and customer base to deliver cutting-edge technology directly to consumers’ doorsteps.
“Harnessing technology to improve everyday lives is at the core of our mission,” said Hisham ElGabry, Group Chief Commercial Officer of Jumia Group. “By offering Starlink through our platform, we are enabling individuals and communities across Kenya to access reliable, fast internet services, which is crucial for economic growth and social advancement.”
The current discount on the Starlink Residential Kit makes it more affordable for Kenyan households and businesses to obtain this advanced technology. The full kit includes a user terminal (satellite dish), mounting tripod, and Wi-Fi router, all designed for simple setup and automatic alignment with satellites passing overhead.
With Jumia’s extensive reach and Starlink’s advanced satellite technology, this partnership represents a pivotal advancement in Kenya’s journey towards becoming a fully connected digital society. The initiative not only underscores Jumia’s commitment to facilitating access to technology but also aligns with national efforts to improve internet accessibility in rural and underserved areas.
For those interested in taking advantage of the limited-time offer, the discounted Starlink Residential Kits are available for purchase on Jumia’s platform, ensuring convenient access to one of the most transformative technologies in today’s digital age.
